Cranes are one of the many animals that inhabit the roughly 1,200-acre nature preserve in western Summit County. People wishing to view the baby cranes at Kimball Junction should avoid disturbing the birds by not going too close. Sandhill cranes in North America usually breed in marshes where nests are built close to water. Females usually lay about two eggs, but it is reportedly rare for each colt to grow to be independent of its mother. Cranes can reportedly live up to 25 years in the wild. Wildlife at the Swaner EcoCenter can be viewed at a nature festival at the facility next week. For information about the events, contact Swaner at 649-1767.
