Fritz has earned a reputation for his bold colors and strange perspectives. He talked about his work Friday in the Badami Gallery at the Kimball Art Center as people milled around. he said. It is hard to miss the duality in Fritz's life. He is an unassuming businessman by day and a flashy savant by night. As if dividing his brain into different hemispheres, Fritz keeps his artrelated business cards in his left pocket and his mortgage business cards in his right. He stood in front of a painting, called "Election," Friday evening amd gestured toward a tree with achingly red leaves. "I'm more prolific than a lot of artists," he said. "I did all of these in about three-and-a-half weeks." Fritz majored in business at Weber State University and didnt start painting professionally until his son nearly drowned in a neighbors swimming pool. That was five years ago. "We tell people I got my bachelor" of arts, and that's all I say," he laughed. Fritz composes his pieces in three dimensions on a computer before going to the canvas. He favors bold colors and simple landscapes, usual- ly with trees in them. He rarely paints blue skies, but most of his scenes take place in summer. He said technology plays a big role in inspiring him. "I used to play video games," he said. "Dungeons and Dragons. That's when I started doing the 3-D art. I realized the ease of use through design." Fritz named impressionists Claude Monet and post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh among his influences. "This is how I get lost," he said." Salt Lake Choral Institute hosts workshops Submitted by University of Utah School of Music SALT LAKE CITY Internationally recognized choral conductor Dr. Brady Allred and the Salt Lake Choral Artists announced last week the second annual Summer Choral Institute, a series of four, themed choral workshops that are open to families, teachers, students, choir directors and any singer who wants an opportunity to sing and perform this summer. Three of the four choral workshops will be held Thursdays through Saturdays with closing performances on Saturday night. Participants in the fourth session can sing through selected masterworks on four Tuesday night spread, over June, July and August. Session themes and dates for 2008 are "The Lullaby of Broadway," June 12-14; "Folk Music from Around the World,"" July 10-13; "Requiems by Faure* and Rutter," August 7-9; and "Choral Masterworks," June 10, July 8, 15 and August 5. The Salt Lake Choral Institute also offers age-specific youth programs, July 8-13, and a choral conducting workshop for beginning-to-advanced choir directors, July 7-11. Rehearsals for adult COOKING WITH 1AX0N THE ART OF THE ARTICHOKE Big seller, naturalist back at the Kimball Art Center til July Of the Record staff Aaron Fritz isnt the portrait of an artist. He wore a solid-colored golf shirt and a sunny, youthful smile at Friday's gallery stroll. He names his paintings after the music he listens to while creating them, mostly Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd songs. Never mind that since picking up a brush in 2004, Fritz has been one of the best-selling artists in Utah. Never mind that he sold 42 pieces in the first hours of the 2005 Park Gty Arts Festival, his first, or that he sold 26 paintings when he exhibited his work in 2006 at the Kimball Art Center. Aaron Fritz is not a typical artist. But hes back selling art. Fritzs strange landscapes, vibrant colors and sliding perspectives are on display in the Badami Gallery at the Kimball Art Center. His more than 20 new works will be shown until July 14. "Other artists have a tough time seeing you walk in and be successful," he said. "People want to buy from a full-time artist... They want, to see me in holey jeans. But I'm at! the easel eight hours a day." Fritz owns a mortgage company in Ogden and works there during the day. That leaves between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. for Fritz, a father of four, to do most of his painting. He said he doesn't like to spend longer than two sittings on a piece. "We have a basement, so I can , turn my music on full blast and not disturb the sleeping bodies upstairs," C-3 The Park Record Wed/Thurs/Fri, June 4-6, 2008 and high school choirs will take place at the Libby Gardner Concert Hall on the University of Utah campus while children's rehearsals will be held ^t the Madeleine Choir School on South Temple. Performances will be held at both the Libby Gardner Concert Hall and the Cathedral of the Madeleine. "We are thrilled to kick off our second annual Summer Choral Institute and again offer the community an opportunity to study, rehearse and perform great choral music," said Allred. "Our goal is to make the art of choral singing available to everyone and we've selected workshop themes that will appeal to a wide variety of musical tastes." Last year's Institute attracted more than 1,000 participants and generated such a wave of enthusiasm and positive feedback that Allred expects the program to grow exponentially every year. He also noted that a guest conductor from the American University in Beirut and a vocal student from Slovenia are participating in the July workshops. "This Summer Choral Institute is already attracting international interest and we expect to see this increase as the word spreads among choral groups, friends and families," added Allred. The first session, "The Lullaby of Broadway," features favorite songs from some of Broadway's most-beloved musicals. Adult and high school singers will rehearse at Libby Gardner Concert Hall Thursday and Friday nights, June 12-13 as well as for several hours on Saturday, June 14. The sessions will conclude with a 7:30 concert that evening. The second session, "Folk Music from Around the World," will be held the evenings of July 10-13 for adults at the Libby Gardner Hall. Children have the option of a morning rehearsal schedule or full-day camp. "Where can we go to lunch and sit outside?" "Where can we go that is affordable and delicious?" "Where can we take the kids and have a cold beer?" "Where'can we get Park City's best pizza, pasta, sandwiches and salads?"
