And she's dyed her formerly light blonde locks a deep plum red, letting her natural waves run laissez-faire down her long back, When the 20-year-old British-born soul singer performs at Deer Valley resort Thursday, she will own It more so than ever before, because her liberation has been about being able to have a say In everything from her image to lyrics, These days, It seems, things are up to the artist herself, which is why, after nearly four years in the business, four Grammy Award nominations, a major advertising campaign for The Gap and an interview with Oprah, her latest album - her third - is called "Introducing Joss Stone." "Basically, I feel like this is the first album I've had the chance to actually make without being told what to do, what to sing, which songs to pick, how the mix should be, how the artwork should be and what color my hair should be," she told The Park Record over the phone from her home town in Devon, England. "I just erased that stuff from my life, because I can't stand it," she continued. "You want me to sing? I'll sing. Just let me be me...I don't like to be molded. You have to free yourself from the silliness. I did that." Stone wrote the lyrics for 12 out of the 14 R&B-infused songs on "Introducing" and enlisted the talent some of her personal heroes to collaborate on several of the tracks. American rapper Common raps on "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now," and for the song "Music," Stone invited hip-hop artist Lauryn Hill - a singer that ranks second only to Aretha Franklin in Stone's eyes. "I love her voice, I love her lyrics. I love everything about her," Stone said. Despite the hip-hop undertones, however, Stone still classifies her music as soul. Soul, according to the young artist, has a broad definition. "To define soul music is kind of impossible, because it could be any genre," she said. "It could be rock, it could be pop, it could be hip-hop, it could be gospel. If you feel it - if you know you mean every word and your emotions are high, that's soul. That's soul music." Visually and vocally, Stone borrows from the seminal years of funk and R&B in the 1960s and 1970s. Her original inspiration is Aretha Franklin who remains, in Stone's eyes, "the best singer in the world." She claims she can't remember the first time she heard music or the first time she realized she was in possession of her deep, soulful voice. No one in her family sings, she said. The way Stone tells it, she picked it up and kept at it. "I just kind of sang and I just made it up as I went along, you know, and then people started to like it," Stone said. "So I carried on." Stone does come by songwriting naturally, however. Her mother is a poet who helped pen the lyrics to "You Had Me," on Stone's second album, "Mind, Body and Soul." Stone likes to keep her performance unfiltered, Thursday there will be no extravagant costume changes or elaborate choreography, and Stone will perform barefoot, mostly for the practical purpose of keeping her balance. "I don't want to fall over," she explained. Her favorite song this tour is an acoustic number she wrote titled "What If I?" a song she has yet to record, "It's saying, 'what if I don't have time to cry about this?' If you're going to be horrible to me, why don't you just tell me to leave? Why don't you look at me in the face and tell me the truth?'" she explained. "It's kind of a miserable song, actually, but it's a fun one to do." Stone may not have the ability to pinpoint where it all began, but she has a good idea of where she's going. She says whatever new projects she might have - more modeling or perhaps - she'll be singing for the rest of her life and singing ner way - the real way, "Alot of people just sing and make records Just to make money and to become famous," Stone said. "They don't really care about the music and it's such a shame, It can be such a beautiful thing, It can be so profound and affect your whole life, if you do it right,,,If you don't, it's just noise," The Park City Performing Arts Foundation's Big Stars, Bright Nights Concert Series will feature Joss Stone at Deer Valley Resort on Thursday, Aug. 30 at6p,m, Opening for stone is 26-year-old R&B singer/songwriter Ryan Shaw.
