Show Sat/Sun/Mon, June 30-July 2, 2007 The Park Record A-11 •+• Group supports vouchers SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Several state lawmakers who support public aid for families attending private schools are forming their own advocacy group to persuade people to voter in favor of vouchers on Nov. 6. The group, which calls itself The Informed Voter Project, is led by Rep. Greg Hughes, R-Draper. and Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem. It will work independently of Parents For Choice in Education, the main pro-voucher group. The new group is intended to give lawmakers more control over promoting the program, which passed in the House by just one vote. Voucher opponents collected petition signatures to suspend vouchers and put the law up for a statewide referendum. "We have a lot of lawmakers who have made votes of conscience and feel we owe it to our constituents to explain what vouchers are, what they do and what they don't do," Hughes said. "People are going to make a choice, and they ought to do it on accurate information," he said. The voucher program would txive parents $500 to S^UOO. depending on family size and income, for each child they send to private school. Children already in private school wouldn't be eligible, except for students from low-income families. Hughes' group wants to raise $300,000 to buy TV ads and mail information to voters. It also wants to hold public meetings in the districts of legislators who voted for vouchers. Pat Rusk, a member of an antivoucher group, Utahns for Public Schools, said she was surprised. ie "Legislators already have the bully pulpit. They can already caJI meetings in their districts whenever they want," Rusk said. "I can understand why citizen groups would do these kinds of things to have a voice. "I don't understand why legislators ... would need to form a (political committee) to defend their legislation," she said. A political consultant, Carter Livingston, said lawmakers have a voice in the debate. "I think that's probably a wise strategy in any case to try to get their point of view out in an effective and uncluttered atmosphere," he said. The committee's board will include pro-voucher leaders of the House and Senate. Gov. Jon Huntsman supports vouchers and signed the law but has said he will not publicly campaign to keep the program alive.
