By APIA WALPBURGER Of the Record staff With 11 players taking their ACT tests last weekend, the Park City High School tennis team might have had a reason to panic as they traveled to the Ogden Invitational Tournament, but instead they saw it as an opportunity. Park City head coach Scooter Mastain loaded up the bus with his remaining varsity and junior varsity players and figured he could use the situation as chance for some of his less experienced competitors to play. Turns out that the team got more even experience than they bargained for. After moving up a number of the junior varsity players on the roster into starting spots, there were four left without a spot. Another school failed to show for the Ogden tournament and the other coaches agreed to form an "all-star" team of sorts, made up of players from different schools and giving the entire Park City busload a shot at varsity time. Junior varsity player Matt Hinman competed in the No. 1 singles position on the all-star squad, beating Clearfield's No. 1 singles player. Playing at varsity also means all of the "allstars" will receive a varsity letter. For the Miners, freshman Jack Burrus was moved into the No. 3 singles position from his usual spot at No.l or No. 2 doubles. He became the only player who did not drop a set (6-0, 6-0). "That's a great testament to Jack's capacity, because he's a freshman," Mastain said. "In two or three years, he'll be one of the top players." Adam Sachs played in the No. 1 doubles position and won one of three matches. Park City beat Clearfield, Layton and Logan to win the tourney. On Tuesday, the Miners were tested again as they traveled to Salt Lake to take on region rival Judge Memorial at Liberty Park. At the No. 1 singles spot, Hunter Nicholas defeated the physically imposing, six-foot, eight-inch Noel Hollingsworth (6-4, 7-6 (7-0). "He's a force to be reckoned with," Mastain said. "He has solid strokes and a solid game." No. 2 doubles player Taylor Smith lost the only match, (4-6, 6-7 (4-7), but said the defeat was a learning experience "It was definitely a wake-up call," Smith said. "It told me I need to get my head in the game. Losing helps you as a player. It helps you realize and build on what you're doing wrong." In doubles play, the Miners went into the match against the Bulldogs focusing on communication, coming into the net and not making unforced errors. Both came out with a win. Mastain said that the challenge of Judge helped the Miners remember that they will need to stay on top of their game as they finish out the regular season and head into the postseason. "We're not going to win everything," Mastain said. "So. we have to be ready every moment, every play.1' Mastain said the best part of coaching Park City is the team is skilled and determined. That allows him to focus more on breaking down the opponent then critiquing their game. "That's why we practice as hard as we do," Mastain said. "So we don't waste time figuring out how to get the ball over the net." The matchup also served to remind the Miners that the Bulldogs are gaining on them in the race for the region and state championship. He says the pressure will push his team to perform better. The Miners still have Morgan. Wasatch and Uintah on the regular-season roster, as well as non-conference matches with powerhouses Waterford and Brighton. Mastain says all of the teams will give the Miners something to work on. "It's a challenge because we don't want to give up a single point," Mastain said. The Miners will be in action again on Tuesday, April 24, when they travel to face Morgan at 3 p.m. SCOTT SWE/PARK No. 1 singles player Hunter Nicholas returns the ball to Judge's Noel Hollingsworth in a tough match on Tuesday afternoon in Salt Lake. Park City prevailed, winning 5-1. Miners beat Bulldogs in focused game Weather the only stormy aspect of this matchup with Judge By APIA WALPBURGER Of the Record staff Austen Stevens knew that Wednesday's soccer game against Judge would be different even before his team walked away with the 3-2 win. Just two weeks earlier, in a cold and chaotic game against the Bulldogs, the Miners left Salt Lake with a win, but turmoil stemming from an alleged racial slur by one of Park City's players during the game and an ensuing mountain of attention followed the team for days. But this Wednesday, Stevens and his teammates were attending a luncheon that included teams and school administrators from both institutions. The event was filled with speeches, sportsmanship, camaraderie and understanding. "It helped us be better sports about everything," Stevens said. "It helped this game be a lot better." "It was a good thing to do that," agreed Park City head coach Mike Guetschow. He was most impressed when one of the Judge captains stood up and reminded everybody what brought them to the soccer field in the first place. "He talked about the game of soccer is a game that we all love and that we need to realize that in the heat of battle," Guetschow said. When the two teams took to the turf at Qulnn's Junction, it was evident that some repair work had been done. Both teams played a fast and focused game, with few penalties and no disturbances except intermittent snow and an icy winter wind whipping across the field. Stevens admitted that lack of focus in this game was not an option. "It was pretty important," Stevens said. "Last game was way out of hand." Perhaps the biggest difference was in Paul Hanley. who received one of the red cards in the previous game's scuffle, but who came back with calm and determination and easily scored two goals for the Miners. His second goal, which bounced in the net off of the post on a free kick near the end of the game, turned out to be the deciding score. "Paul's been our most versatile player," Guetschow said. "He has been giving us great effort.11 Hanley also started the game off on the right foot, scoring the first goal midway through the first hah1.
