Show Getting to School Safely ' By Dale Thompson Students are heading back to school, and whether they are vvalking, biking or busing, it is always a good idea to do it safely. Park City School District Director of Transportation Brent Chaston knows how and offered :he following suggestions: If students walk... Students should always walk with a buddy, regardless of age, • c ace traffic and keep to the sidevvalk. If they have to walk on the road, they need to keep as close to the shoulder as possible, Chaston said. "We do live in a mountain esort," he added, noting that during winter months, walking to school can present special challenges. As temperatures drop and the snow starts to fall, he advises the following: • Wear proper footwear and light colored or reflective clothing because it may still be dark out /hen leaving the house. Safety tips for the school commute Bring a flashlight, if one is needed. • Go slowly, and take smaller steps on slippery surfaces. Walk single file when the shoulder of the road is buried. If students do fall because it is wet and icy, they should try and protect their head. • Look both ways before crossing the street. Chaston also suggested that parents who live in a neighborhood with students who are not eligible to ride the bus, start a "walking school bus," and escort the group to school. Transportation is available for ineligible bus riders on a firstcome first-serve basis. For more information visit www.pcschools.us. If students bike... • Obey all traffic laws. Ride in the same direction as cars. Walk bikes through crosswalks and intersections. • Use a lock to keep the bike secure at school. • Have reflective tape or lights so the bike is visible to cars. If students take the bus... • Arrive five minutes before the WHAT DOES YOUR M I D D L E DO AFTER S C H O O L ? bus departs. If it is running more than 10 minutes, late parents should call the transportation department at 645-5660. - Continued on Pa^e 9 SCHOOLER EDUCATIONAL ADVANTAGE, INC.
