Show B-5 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, May 27-30, 2006 Prep water polo alive and well in Park City Is your daughter Past season bodes well for next year Submitted by Randy Jones Water polo in Utah... not yet a sanctioned USHAA sport, but definitely getting there. It's a highly competitive and growing activity for high school students, especially here in Park City. Like lacrosse and ice hockey, water polo has been a "club sport" in Utah for years. In prior seasons, kids from Park City have faced the likes of 4A and 5 A Kearns, Skyline, Highland and Murray over and over, all season long, and then lined up against the same teams in the post-season. This made it almost impossible to gel past the first round of any "state" tournament. This season though, with well-organized and coached boys and girls squads from Park City, Cache Valley, Cedar City, Bear River, Canyon View, Delta, St. George and Tooele high schools, the first-ever 3A State Water Polo Tournament took place two weekends aeo. The 2006 Park City girls* water polo team included just one senior. Hannah Nicholes, and an abundance of young and/or first-year players. Even so, they competed from the heart, and never gave up. Though disappointed with their win/loss record in the regular season, they were competitive in most games, and played well at state. The 2007 varsity girls" team will be deeper and much more experienced. Junior veterans Laura Steckbauer, Amanda Margulies, Marnie Nicholes and Tiffany Henry will likely return as team leaders. Margulies and the younger Nicholes both earned points for Park City at the State 3A Swimming Championships last February. Several younger players will also return as veterans of varsity polo Over 9,500 locations worldwide. (435)658-2811 FREE for the summer? She is now. 177* Put AW.Itf 13 F i l l Cuy.
