Salt Lake resident Tonya Downs, 40, is charged with unauthorized control of a vehicle, a third-degree felony. Her alleged accomplice, Nicholas Justin Anderson, 32, faces two third-degree felony charges of criminal activity and obstruction of justice. The two stand accused of aiding in the escape of 26-year-old Charles Val McGurdy, who left the work detail April 10 around 3 a.m. The prisoner was rearrested in Salt Lake County around 10:30 a.m. after he attempted to cash a check in Midvalc, authorities say. When he escaped, the prisoner was helping do laundry at the hotel as part of a work-release program offered to inmates. According to Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds, within weeks of his escape McGurdy was slated for release.
