She ran after him and asked: "Where arc you going?" He replied, "I'm going to Lucas' house, I asked you if I could go and you say yes." The mother slowly goes back to her cooking, wondering when he had talked to her -- because she doesn't remember it -- and why she doesn't recall being asked. Have you ever experienced this before? This is not only happening between parents and children but also between spouses, friends and people at their jobs. The power to listen is the willingness to listen not only with the outer car and our body movements but with our inner ear and all our faculties - being present and offering to whom we are listening all our attention and respect. 1 know that for many of you, moving lo the United States has changed your life and you are responsible for many things that you didn't have before in your native land. The time seems longer there, there was more time lo visit friends and relatives, some days were so long that maybe you were even bored. We were not in a hurry, only a few lucky ones had a job and there was plenty of time to listen and visit. Now. things have changed. Many in your family arc working and people are coming and going, your house phone and cell phone may ring at the same time, the TV could be on and someone in another room is listening to music. Visiting your friends or family is a luxury and who in ihe world has time to play with the children, help with homework, read to them or visit with your spouse? For quite some time there is an illness that has been spreading in our society and it is "Un-present listening." We could call it also "Uncaring listening." Why do you think that more people are suffering from depres- Spring Sale has Sp Purveyors of Style and Comfort Luxury Bedding Sumptuous Bath i Fine Table Linens i Elegant Baby Gifts sion? Why do you think more youth arc getting into trouble? Quite a few years ago, there was a circle of people, called family and friends, that usually served as the support group of individuals. You got together often, got feedback from them and they were there to listen. Now less and less people have that in their lives, and the power lo listen with their heart and being listened to is disappearing. We can change things in our lives, give back to ourselves and those we love the benefit of "listening with our mind and soul/1 The rules to develop and maintain the power to listen are: I) Acknowledge. When someone talks to you, stop what you are doing, look into his eyes and let him know that you are ready to listen. 2} Assess the situation with respect and love. It's here you can put on a scale what you are doing and what your child, spouse or friend is trying to tell you. If you are in the middle of something that needs to be done immediately, like making dinner, and you can't take a half an hour, right then, to help your child with his homework, tell him that as soon you put all the vegetables on to cook you will help him. In another situation, if someone told you that your pet had been hit by a car, you'd leave your soup or stew half done to go see what happened. 3) Schedule time to listen and be listened to. This may sound a little extreme - how can we schedule time to listen? We have 24 hours a day and seven days a week... we have to make an effort to connect with those we love, saving a few minutes every day to converse and find out what happened in their lives that day, if they are doing well, if they are worried about something, if they need something. You also need time in the week to connect with those you care about, to listen to them and also share what is in your heart. If we can develop this power of listening, we will also be rescuing the sense of respect that sometimes feels rather vain in our society. The best starting point of dialog is listening, let's do it. We have so much to share with each other.
