The event will feature about 60 young, promising divers from around the state, as well as Washington and Oregon. The diving will take place on the one-meter and threemeter springboards. SLAP diving, an amateur youth diving club serving both Salt Lake and Park City is hosting the meet. The meet is designed for youth ages 6-18 and will showcase beginning divers to top-level teenage divers. According to SLAP program director Gene Mclntyrc, the 16-18 age group level should bring in some of the best divers in the country - some who are doing up to ihrcc-and-half somersaults off of the boards. "If you want to see some of the best diving in the country, you want to watch our older divers," Mclntyrc said. Brandon Watson, a product of Brigham Young University's youth agelevel diving program and one of the top three males divers in the country, will be at the meet. Mclntyrc says that he is sure to impress the crowd. Watson will dive for BYU next year. "He's probably the highest level we will have and he's a Utah kid." Mclntyre said. He says there will also be an opportunity to watch the youngest divers, who, while still learning basic skills, are already doing amazingly difficult dives for their age. The SLAP program started in Park City two years ago and has a developmental level for divers who are just learning the sport and an advanced level with divers competing on the state, regional and national levels. With national powerhouse Wasatch in one direction and top state programs at North and South Summit in the other, it seems that schools like Park City and The Oakley School might give up before they hit the mat. Instead, it serves to push them even harder. "The guys that are here - it makes them want to work even harder, because they don't have the experience," said head coach Eric O'Connor. Both of the young teams headed to Salt Lake for a quad meet against Woods Cross and host, Granger. Although neither team won the meet they both held their own and gained experience in the process. Park City has only 14 wrestlers, but O'Connor and assistant coach Chris Spealler are committed to creating a successful developmental program. Currently, they have a grade school-aged group and plan to add a junior high club team soon. "Hopefully these other programs will build something for the future," O'Connor said. The Oakley School is in its first year as a SCOTT SMEJPARK RECORD Shane Hanson tries to make a move at Wednesday's meet at Granger High. program under the direction of Russell Love. Park City's biggest challenge is that they do not have boys wrestling in four weight classes. This discrepancy causes them to forfeit 24 points in every meet.
