Show B-7 The Park Record Wed/Thurs/Fri, September 28-30, 2005 Base jumper makes world record • Miles Daisher, the organizer of Park City's Blade Running Contest, smashed the old record of 25 base jumps in one day. Daisher jumped off of the Pine bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho 57 times between midnight Thursday and midnight Friday, Sept. 15 and 16. Each jump included triple and double flips, multiple flips with twists, head-long dives with spins, and tricks with strange names that defy spelling. At the exit poinlf\ihe exact spot where the juniper stands before leaping into the air), Daisher spoke with enthusiasm before every jump, then with a deep breath said, "All right, here we go. 3-2-1 See Ya." For back flips, the scariest to watch, he leaped high with an immediate rotation that brought his helmet close to the bridge. As soon as he opened his chute, the spectators on the bridge could hear his enthusiasm, as he cheered himself on. Often he hit the bull's eye of the target in the landing area. The Snake River meanders 483 feet below the bridge. Its canyon walls offer only rock climbing access. Daisher climbed the wall, jogged up 20 steps, then rode a bicycle the last quarter of a mile to his exit point. Do the math - he climbed over 27,000 feet iri one day. At 10:30 p.m. Friday, a fast- moving storm brought in high winds and rain and shut down the new world record at 57 jumps. Three more jumps and he would have climbed higher than Mt. Everest in one day! He jogged up about 1,140 steps and rode a bicycle over 14 miles. Park City resident Glenn McConkey volunteered for 20 of the 24 hours. "I climbed the canyon wall once, and have tremendous respect for Miles," McConkey said. She reports that ESPN and - local Idaho TV reporters and camera men crowded the bridge at all hours, except early morning.
