United Way officials said. While well-meaning citizens were turning up on Sunday attempting to make contributions of cash and goods at Camp Williams, it s a federal law that a military installa- tion cannot accept any type of donations. Instead, officials directed people to call the United Way of Utah hotline. (801) 736-8929, or visit United Way of Salt Lake's Web site, www.uw.org. The local United Way is the only Utah entity currently authorized by the State of Utah to accept monetary donations for the displaced persons, and the United Way of Salt Lake Web site is already equipped for immediate credit card donations. All such contributions will stay in Utah. United Ways of Utah representatives were staffing the United Way hotline on Sunday and were expecte d to be on call again throughout the day Monday, said Deborah Bayle Nielsen, president and CEO of United Way of Salt Lake. "We're here to help," said Nielsen, explaining that both long- and short-term needs for the displaced persons would be addressed as priorities become clear. "We can make sure the people who have been brought to Utah can receive these donations directly and efficiently." Nielsen suggested that those still wanting to make donations of goods or services call the State of Utah's Katrina Relief Line at 1-866-8732437. Huntsman helps to end childhood drinking The Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, the nation's only initiative guided by the spouses of governors and aimed at preventing childhood drinking during the critical ages of nine to 15, has announced that Utah First Lady Mary Kaye Huntsman has joined this unique and successful effort. Huntsman brings to the Leadership her long-standing .devotion to children's issues and service to others. She has created several nationally-known service programs, including the National Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's "Bag of Hope" program, which provides mentors to help children deal with emotional issues related to the diagnosis of diabetes. This January, she launched the "Power in You" initiative, a " kid-to-kid, heart-to-heart" mentoring program that promotes service and supports educational success among teenagers. In March, Huntsman participated in the National Education Association's "Read Across America Day," speaking to elementary school students about the importance of reading and literacy. • "The Leadership is indeed fortunate to have Mary Kaye Huntsman join our ranks," said Leadership co-chair 1 Columba Bush, First Lady of Florida./We share her heartfelt commitment to helping children succeed and thrive, and we know one of the best ways to do that is by preventing childhood drinking." "I fervently believe that we have to support and protect our children in every way we possibly can," Huntsman said. "Preventing childhood drinking is critical to that work. Now that science has taught us so much about how alcohol damages developing bodies and minds, we simply must prioritize the prevention of childhood drinking. It is essential to protecting our kids." Huntsman has served on several community boards, including the Utah Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, KSL television's Family Now Campaign and the United Way's Success by Six Board. She co-chaired Utah's first "Speaking of Women's Health Conference." The Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free includes the spouses and special appointees of sitting governors from 35 states, the District of Columbia and Guam. They organize campaigns, events and programs in their home states to increase public awareness of childhood drinking and promote prevention. At the national .1 STOP By AFID SAy HELLO!
