Summit County Fire Warden Bryce Boyer met Thursday with Greg Larson, Swaners education and land manager, to discuss whether a roughly 100-square-foot patch of Dyer's woad at the preserve should be set ablaze. Park Ridge Estates residents along Old Ranch Road would have front-row seats for the spectacle as a portion of the Snydcrvillc Basin nature preserve near the intersection of Old Ranch Road and Highland Drive bums. "We need to make sure we're not going to smoke the road out," Boyer said Thursday, adding that preventing smoke from impairing the visibility of motorists on nearby Interstate 80 would be a top priority. The plan will be pitched next week to Swaners board of directors, he said. "We have a lot of things we have to put together yet, politically, and through the preserve," Boyer said. "It may be toward the end of next week.'1 Prescribed bums are often used by firefighters to reduce wildfire fuels and improve wildlife habitat in overgrown areas. What began as a small fire to purposely burn 600 acres in Wasatch County on Sept. 23, 2003, grew out of control and scorched almost 8.000 acres, smoking out residents in Midway and along the Wasatch Front. "Basically, its going to be a very, very small bum," Boyer said about the Swaner fire plan. He is not aware of firefighters ever conducting a prescribed burn in the Snyderville Basin. Boyer would expect to begin the fire around 8 a.m. and burn the weeds for about an hour. "We have to look at what the weather conditions are, what winds are," he said, adding that as many as 20 firefighters may be needed to monitor the bum. "The primary concern is going to be the smoke management plan." Larson wasnt sure this week what impact the fire would have on Dyer's woad seeds. "We're sort of in the informationgathering stage," he said Thursday, adding that nearby homeowners should rest easy. "We certainly would never enter into a situation if we thought [property damage] was a and you will recieve a free report quickly, by email and without having to speak to an agent. "The last thing we're going to do is set the county on fire," Commissioner Bob Richer said during the commission's weekly meeting Wednesday, encouraging Summit County Public Works to inform residents about the proposal. "The phone will be ringing off the hook." Before a prescribed bum could begin, the state Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, and the federal Environmental Protection Agency must sign off on the plan, Boyer said. COUNTY SHERIFF'S REPORT Investigators have determined that spinal bones found in the Uinta Mountains near Kamas on Aug. 9 are not human. Meanwhile, after deputies located suspects in an alleged holdup at Kimball Junction, the people who reported the Aug. 11 crime recanted the story, authorities say. A woman told a dispatcher a "group of [four] guys pulled out a [knife] and gun on her boyfriend that works at Staples," a Summit County Sheriffs Office media report states. According to Sheriff's Office Captain Joe Offret, the people questioned in the case were Boy Scouts. No weapons were located. A bicycle racer reportedly suffered a back injury on the Mirror Lake Highway during a race in the Uinta Mountains on Aug. 13. In another accident, a 10-year-old boy suffered minor injuries while riding his motorcycle near railroad tracks near Echo. He was likely knocked over by wind and debris from a passing train around 11:45 p.m. According to Offret, North Summit paramedics transported the victim in an ambulance to Primary Children's Medical Center. The train struck the motorcycle, states a Sheriff's Office media report.
