Several Park City grads are joining the military, attending academies By JARED WHITLEY Of the Record staff Andrew Christian is enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland. His grades were among the top 25 of Park City seniors this year. He's participated in football, ski racing, and track teams. But he admits he's not a great swimmer. "That's my weakness as far as this whole thing is concerned,'1 he said. "I'll guess I'll have to become one." Christian is among several Park City High School '05 seniors who plan to join the military this year. Entering the armed forces has its share of benefits education, health care, career placement - but it represents an especially serious commitment during a time of war. Christian's father was in the Navy, but he never seriously considered it as a career for himself until about two years ago. "Actually I didn't even know what the Naval Academy was until about two years ago," he said. "It's kind of a surprise to me because I wasn't planning on it." After four years at the academy, Christian's commitment will last at least five more years, time he's happy to take while plotting his own career's course. "I'm pretty much just hoping to figure out what I want to do with my life," he said. "At the same time, I'm doing my part...I won't have to worry about a job for the next nine years." Christian has already dipped his toe in the waters of naval service. Last year, he attended the summer seminar, a kind of boot camp, al the academy and this March he made an overnight visit there too. "I really like the community and team atmosphere that I think the military and the academy offered," Christian said. That unity is the same kind Christian says he's experienced on his sports teams. Christian isn't sure what aspect of Navy service he'll pursue, but he's not adverse to entering combat. "If I do, I hope it's something that's worthwhile," he said. "A way for me to say thanks" for granted...I was kind of fed up with this and I decided I needed to defend my country." Juan Granados will enlist in the Marines six months from now. In the interim, he's focusing on boxing. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Originally from Mexico, Grandaos sees military service as a way to pay the United States back. "It's kind of hard to explain because I'm not from this country and it's just a way for me to say thanks for letting me be here, so I'm going to serve this country, being an immigrant and everything," Granados said. "I kind of felt like a patriotic duty," he said. "Too many kids were taking their freedoms for granted and not willing to stand up for what they believe in. I was kind of fed up with this and I decided I needed to defend my country." America's current military conflicts have definitely been on Bova's mind. "It has made it harder to make the decision," Bova said. "It's definitely something that you can't overlook, but I feel good about what I'm doing." John Gregersen is also joining the Marines. Austin Stobaugh signed up for the Marines' Reserved Officer Training Corps at Texas A and M. As he looked at his career, Stobaugh was split over entering the military or the ministry. "It was a pretty tough choice, but I think I'm being called to the military," said Stobaugh, who hopes to make general one day. He's looking forward to the "extra challenge" the Marines offer and wants to serve in a place like Japan or South Korea because North Korea is a "very belligerent" nation. "I'm going to miss Park City" Meagan Snyder, who was this year's student body president, began her service in the U.S. Coast Guard last year, when she attended a boot camp for prospective cadets.
