Orion's CD Reviews White Stripes 'Get Behind Me Satan' 1 keep hearing about how different this album is from the White Stripes' previous releases. I've heard it described as strange and self indulgent. Ifs true that, since they recorded "Get Behind Me Satan".themselves, Meg and Jack while had the freedom to do whatever they wanted. It does not seem to me, however, thjg there is much experimentation going on at all. Nearly every song on the album Underwritten by T.O.S.H. Every now and then there is some weird noise or a choppy, distorted guitar solo, but those moments are rare and few. There is only one track ("The Nurse") that really struck me as different from anything the White Stripes have done in the past, and even this one departure relies mostly on a catchy marimba melody for the body of the song. As for die rest of the album: if you are in the mood for insatiably poppy hard rock/blues you will be in heaven listening to this album. Jack white is a good songwriter, I'll admit that. His lyrics are creative and inordinately original, and his delivery is consistently powerful and just plain cool. The music he writes is fitting for his style, but dangerously redundant. I think the White Stripes would be one of the better present-day rock bands if it would play around a little bit more with their song structures. Listening to "Get Behind Me Satan," one can hear the bands desire to be weird; it fairly oozes from the speakers sometimes. But yet they are still writing simple, stripped down pop songs with only a meager side of oddity. - KeWn Barney, Orion's Staff The New York Times crossword puzzle "SWIPING THIRD" 7 II 15 19 20 ACROSS One-piece dress Dispute 2002 erupler 'Two Mules for Sister ": 1970 film Restlessness 55 56 stock Without a 22 23 25 27 28 29 30 33 34 35 36 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 50 54 59 61 62 63 Nobelist Wiesel One may precede a pun Revenuers, for short Biblical principles?
