"A lot of us do more than one medium," noted Craghead, who is selling both jewelry and sculptures at the coop. The cooperative is currently a temporary establishment, operating in the City Hall-owned space thought the end of September. "OUT lease goes to Sept. 30, but your hope and prayer is that we're able to continue in another location," Craghead said. The Professional Artists Association started the co-op with the assistance of the Summit County Arts Council after the Park City Council approved the organizations' proposal for the space. The location came to the cooperative through a unique sequence of events. The Historical Society and Museum has an agreement with City Hall allowing the organization to. take over the spaces in the building as the old leases expire. So, Jans Mountain Outfitters realized it would lose the space at 513 Main St. at the end of its lease. So the company took an opportunity to move to a different location, at 540 Main St., at the beginning of June. Park City allowed Jans to pay a small fee to buy out of its lease at 513 Main St. four months early, opening the space from the beginning of June through the end of September, when the Historical Society is planning to take it over. 'The enthusiasm of the group has been really exciting," she said. "It s just been a fabulous time for all of us.'1 She also noted other benefits of participating in such an arrangement. "This is one of the few ways we can control our own destiny in the art market," she said. Most of the proceeds from sales will go to the artists, with a portion going toward the permanent establishment of the cooperative and another portion allocated for operating expenses. In the coming weeks, the co-op plans to participate in the June 24 gallery stroll. The organization will also have demonstrating artists appearing periodically, and Craghead said the group plans to look into some other collaborations with the visual-arts groups in town. Craghead noted that the city had taken a chance to help and promote local artists through the co-op. "We hope they'll be pleasantly surprised" she said. She added that the organization's ambitions were primarily for the local artistic community. "It s for the benefit of all, not just one." she said. "It's a collaboration among artists." This time the proposal worked, and the City Council agreed to let the cooperative have the space for the four months it was available. "I thought, this is a great chance to try a littler experiment to see what would happen," said City Council member Marianne Cone, who was the projects principal advocate within the city government. Craghead credited Cone and Park City Municipal for its help with the project. The city offered the space to the art gallery for $1 rent for the four months, according to Craghead. "They've been fabulous with helping us do this," she saidCone likened the co-op project to an art class. "As an art teacher, I loved to see what happened when I gave an assignment," she said. On Monday afternoon, Craghead was helping get the co-op ready, positioning works of art and displays and getting phones hooked up. The cooperative was advantageous, she noted, because it brought together all of the positive traits of its members. According to Craghead, most of the artists have experience selling their works independently and in booths at the Park City Art Festival, but few have ever run a gallery on Main Street. The co-op, she said, will not have a professional staff. Instead, it will be run exclusively by the participating artists. ATTACK ASTHMA. ACT NOW.
