Crews from North Summit Fire District and Park City Fire District extinguished the blaze, which ignited south of Interstate SO near the Promontory subdivision. Sparks from the brakes of an eastbound motorist's vehicle likely started the fire, said Summit Couuty Fire Warden Brycc Boycr. "'Hints really, from my recollection, one of the earliest jwiklfires| that we have had in a long, long lime," said Park City Fire Battalion Chief Steve Zwirn. "To get a grass fire this lime of year is really unusual, especially one thai s realiy ripping." Firefighters were called earlier that week to a brush fire that grew Eastslders appointed Planning Commission to Two current members of the Eastern Summit County Planning Commission - South Summit resident KayCee Simpson and Jill Houston, of Wanship - were recently rc-appointed to the board. The Summit County Commission also chose Upton resident Thomas Boyer, to replace Henefer resident Arlin Ovard, who recently retired after serving his term limits on the East Side commission. In 1996, the Summit County Planning Commission split into two boards in an attempt to serve different regions of the county more effectively. Echo residents Frank Cattelan and Tim Mertens, Tom Brown, of Peoa. and Oakley resident Patrick Cone, were turned down for the three open positions, which expire in February 200S. Deputies confiscate drug paraphenudia at Basin store A man was arrested April 13 after Summit County Sheriff's Office deputies confiscated drug paraphernalia from inside a store at the Tanger Outlet Center near Kimball Junction. According to Sheriff's Office Capt. Joe Offret, officers were called to respond to The Children's Place, a clothing retailer at 6699 Landmark Drive, at 8:47 a.m. An employee found paraphernalia containing illegal drug residue in the locker of another siorc worker, Offret said. Charges can be enhanced because the alleged crime occurred at a shopping center, he adds. Tnree appointed to library board This week the Summit County Commission appointed three women to serve on the Summit County Library Board. Coalville resident Debra Bryant, will serve the remainder of Robyn Knudsen's term, which expires in February 2006. Westsider Megan Fernandez and Oakley resident Heidi Lawrence will each serve 4-year terms [hal expire in 2009. Applying CPR properly can require a minimum of four people, said Steve Zwfrn, a battalion chief with the Park City Fire District. The department is currently testing equipment, pictured here attached to a mannequin, that compresses patients' chests for paramedics, which frees up personnel, he said. PCFD has not purchased the machine. More importantly, the $17,000 device is about three times as effective at reviving someone as a human providing the compression, Zwirn said. "It will circulate your blood," he said, adding that the machine also pumps drugs through the body. "A gentleman was trying to burn ditches and the wind came up. It got away and started burning into some pines.'1 Boyer said, adding that the man extinguished the fire with a hose before South Summit Fire District had arrived. Boyer also has received several false alarms. "Notify the Summit County Sheriff's Office dispatch prior to starting a fire or doing a burn. It's just a good idea," he advises landowners who intend to burn debris on their property this spring. County dispatchers can be reached at 615-3600.
