Show Wed/Thurs/Frl, February 16-18, 2005 A-21 The Park Record South Summit wants less exposure Students help district craft modesty policy By JARED WHITLEY Of the Record staff With the Britney Spcars-i/.ation of contemporary styles, less than modest dress is not uncommon, especially in schools. So South Summit School District is considering ii district-wide policy to chimp down on immodesty in its three schools. "Every school lights il, that's one of the contemporary styles," said Tim Smith. South Summit School District superintendent. "Every school in the slate of Utah, and the nation I'm sure, has their challenges with contemporary styles. And some are not appropriate." Common problems include girls showing bare midriffs and boys letting their pants sag down so their underwear shows. Gangrelated apparel is also forbidden, and students aren't allowed to wear hats inside school buildings. Immodest dress is disruptive to the learning process. Smith said. "If a young lady is showing cleavage, that's not appropriate. If a young man is doing the same, showing their undergarments, it's 1 YEAR INTEREST FREE FINANCING, OAC While each South Summit school has had its own policy, making a districl-wide decision on the issue is a matter of consistency. "All we did was try to make it a consistent policy, so a fifth-grader knows what's expected in middle school." Smith said. "It makes it easier to manage." The policy was introduced at a South Summit School Board meeting in February, Smith said, and will probably be approved in April. In crafting the dress code policy. South Summit enlisted community councils and student leaders from each of the schools. "It was exciting to listen to (students') comments, the intelligent manner with which they articulated their ideas. If fact, their ideas were more conservative than the parents. Smart they are!" Smith wrote in a press statement. '"I am buoyed up with the caliber of our youth. As adults I am not sure we KYLE students dressing immodestly. listen enough to our young peopie." South Summit High School Principal Gary Twitchell agrees that immodesty is a common problem. "It's a problem in all schools." he said. "Its just the styles and the kids wanting to dress in the current styles, which aren't really conducive to learning."
