SAT/SUN/MON/TUES, JANUARY 8-11,2005 Briefs UDOT Executive Director retained by new governor Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. today announced he would retain John Njord as executive director of the Utah Department of transportation. Njord has served as UDOT's executive director since May 2001. Njord said he would like to continue to serve the citizens of the state by ensuring a safe and efficient transportation system to foster the state's economic development and new jobs and businesses. One of the challenges Njord will face will be accommodating the state's anticipated growth with the limited funding currently available for transportation improvements. The state currently has $16.5 billion in unfunded needs while travel on Utah's highways is expected to double over the next 20 years. A licensed professional engineer, Njord also served the department as deputy director and chief engineer, as well as director of transportation planning for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, where he was responsible for transportation planning during the Olympic Games. Snake Creek Grill will be host a Tsunami Victims' Benefit Dinner to collect funds for fishermen on the coast of India. "Last week, we'd been talking about it with the wait staff," says Hill. "I had read something in the paper the Thursday after [the tsunami] hit, and it mentioned that iboats.com, along with FatPipe would be donating boats to fishing villages. So I went to the iboats.com website and spoke with the owner at FatPipc Networks. We're confident about the relief that we're working with because iboats.com and FatPipc have offices here and in India-and they've also received non-profit status." Iboats.com is partnering up with FatPipc Networks, a Utah-based company that develops wireless internet technology, to provide a source of income for those thai lost their breadwinners in two hard-hit coastal cities in eastern India, Naalluvcthapalli and Vizuthamvadi. The Chief Executive-Officer of FatPipe, Bhaskar Ragula, was born in India and maintains a subsidiary location in the city of Chennai. India, near the disaster areas. 'Hie proceeds from these rentals will then be given to the families of thefishermenwho lost their lives to aid them in generating a livelihood.' "We felt that it seems as though there's enough food, clothing and medical supplies that are getting as far as they can go," explains Hill. "With FatPipe and iboats.com, we figure maybe this way we can help to rebuild people's lives. If [the fishermen] can get back to work, then they can catch fish and they'll be able to catch more than the supplies being sent over and also hopefully be able to fend for themselves." U.S. Consumers trashed 129 billion plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers in 2004. rather j|jg*i recycling them. This amount is 60 percent higher than in 1990, reports Pat Franklin, executive director of theCRI. The decline in recycling may be due to two factors: a lacK of opportunity to recycle and a lack of incentives to recycle, said Franklin. The environmental impacts of throwing away 129 billion containers is equivalent to the energy consumption of 36 million barrels of crude oil and the generation of 4.5 million tons of greenhouse gases. There is plenty of demand from end-users for recovered containers to manufacture products such as new cans and bottles, clothing, carpet and other items, Franklin said. "The problem, ironically, is not a lack of markets for the materials, but rather a lack of supply" she observed. "The containers are not getting from the consumer to the recycling businesses." Recycle Utah in Park City accepts any type of containers-glass, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, paper and other metals. For more information visit wwww.recycleutah.org or www.container-recycling.org.
