WOODS CROSS For this Woods Cross home game late Friday night, there would be no overtime, no scoreless halves and no doubt which was the better soccer team as the Wildcats rambled to their second ', straight, eight-goal performance in less than a week. The 'Cats mauled the visiting Granite Farmers 8-2, with six different players registering goals for Woods Cross. ! The Granite matchup came on the heels of ; Tuesday's 8-0 pounding of the West High Panthers quite different from a 0-0, double overtime tie with Bountiful Braves just one week before. ! With the win, the first place Wildcats strengthened ; their hold on the Region 6 standings, improving their ; record to 6-0-1 and 6-2-1, overall. 'We played more of our own game," said Woods ! Cross coach Kevin Rigby. ; 4And they had to play catch-up.' By half time, the 'Cats were up 4-1 and seemed to score at will in the second period i Granite never threatened Woods Cross, although ; the Farmers did pull to within 2-1 on a ricocheted ball which bounced off a Wildcat defender and into the goal. However, the freak play was all Granite had go-. go-. J ing for it. Halfback Danny Morris gave the 'Cats a l-O lead at 29:04 of the first half as he took advantage of an un-I un-I attended goal and raced by the goalie. I Almost immediately, striker Corby Egan took an . inside pass and kicked the ball by the helpless Granite ; goalkeeper for a 2-0 'Cat lead. Then the unthinkable happened. The 'Cats, who had held every region opponent scoreless, stumbled. A Farmer shot bounced off a Woods Cross defender and into the goal. Granite center Schad Bowers was nearest to the ball and received credit for the score. Sandwiched by two defenseman, halfback Jason Childs made the offensive play of the game, registering register-ing the 'Cats' next score. Childs slipped to the left and sent a hard shot that bounced off the right bar and into the goal. Egan scored his second goal of the night with three minutes left in the half, handing the 'Cats a 4-1 lead at the break. In the second half, the 'Cats had scored four times by me midway point. Forward B.J. Leonard, halfback Shane Hockum, Childs and halfback Dave Wright all logged goals for Woods Cross in the remaining half. Granite center Chris Wilcox earned the Farmers final goal of the evening. "We gave up two goals," Rigby said. "One was a ricochet, and the other was against the reserves who played 20-25 minutes. "Those goals are unfortunate, but they had to happen sometime. I'm glad they're out of the way." Soccer action continues this week as the 'Cats face Jordan today at 4 p.m. on the road and host Murray Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Bountiful Braves will look to rebound from a physical, l-l overtime tie with Jordan Friday by travelling to Murray at 4 p.m. today. Friday pits the ' Braves against the Farmers in Salt Lake. Game time is 4 p.m. The Davis Darts, who enjoyed a bye Friday, return to action today at Roy. On Friday, the Darts host cross-county rival Viewmont. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Viewmont, now comfortably atop the Region l standings with its 2-1 win over Weber Friday, will travel to Layton today at 4 p.m. Submarined... Bountiful sophomore Cory Beynon, 14, is submarined by a Jordan High opponent in Friday afternoon's after-noon's Region 6 matchup.
