Phipps places first & third at remote control car races A 12-year-old Farmington boy recently strutted his stuff as he blew away competitors more than twice his age at the recent "April Fools' Classic" RC races. Logan Phipps, who attends Knowlton Elementary School, stole the show at the competition, held April 4 and 5 at Hansen's Intermountain Inter-mountain RC Raceway in Magna. The event, which involved remote control cars and trucks competing on a dirt track, is the largest of its kind in Utah with 158 competitors from Utah, Idaho, California and South Dakota. Logan was the top qualifier in both the stock truck and stock car classes where he went on to place first and third respectively in the final competition. He was the youngest racer ever to have held the first place truck trophy title. "The next youngest person at these races is twice his age," his mother, Marie Phipps explained. Because Logan is shorter than his adult counterparts, he was supplied with a booster box on which to stand so he could see the entire course. "All the men are really fantastic for him. They help him out, coach him and root for him they treat him like he's their own son," Mrs. Phipps explained. "It's like he's got a million fathers out there." Mrs. Phipps said she believed more children should become involved in-volved with the sport, but understands that cost is often the deterring de-terring factor. Logan received his first RC, the truck, last Christmas. Over the last summer, he worked at his parents construction company and earned enough money to purchase himself the car he now runs. Mrs. Phipps attributes the boys success to the time he spent playing Nintendo when he was younger. "Have you ever tried to play Nintendo against a kid? You just can't win and this is just like it," Mrs. Phipps said of the remote control con-trol vehicles. The Bountiful Chamber of Commerce has asked Logan and Hansen's RC Raceway for assistance in designing and building a track for the Bountiful Centennial Celebrations to be held in June. Owners of remote control cars and trucks of all types will be invited to participate in the event. |
