Show Darts peaking at right time By BRET GALLACHER Sports Writer SALT LAKE CITY A week and a half ago Davis was limping its way toward the end of the regular season With a 10-10 10-10 record and absolutely no momentum heading into the tournament, hardly anyone thought the Darts would cause any commotion. To say the very least, Davis snapped out of its rut After unbelievable upsets i the first two rounds over Mountain View and Brighton, the Darts are one victory away from the state championship game. The difference? differ-ence? For the first time since ear- ly in the season Davis is playing like a team, not relying on one or two players to come through. While Ryan Halliday and Travis Homer have been playing their usual steady game, others have stepped up and made the difference. The first and most obvious is senior center David Isaacson. Against an excellent Mountain View team Isaacson literally led the Darts to victory with seven rebounds and 22 points on 10-15 shooting. The hot streak continued for Isaacson in the Brighton contest with 17 points on 7-11 shots, along with 12 rebounds. "David caa do that," said SEE PEAK ONPG.14 Peak CONTINUED FROM PG.13 Davis coach Jay Welk. "If we can just get him the ball in good spots, he can really get on a roll." ', Entering the Brighton game, Isaacson knew he would be matched mat-ched up with the highly touted Weber State-bound Joey Haws. The confrontation turned out to be all Isaacson as Haws was held to few points. "I just wanted to stop him," said Isaacson. "I knew that if we r concentrated on stopping all of them (Brighton), that we could." Another spark for Davis which has added to the recent success is Brad Wood. The senior guard has been the first man off the bench for the Darts all year. Usually Wood's assignment is to stop the other team's hot shooter with his tenacious defense. While the defense has not eluded him. Wood has also found his shooting stroke. Against Mountain View Wood came into the game with Davis trailing 21-15. Moments later Wood had accounted for i 1 F , w straight Dart points to bring Davis back to a 28-28 tie. "Brad coming off the bench like he did was the key to our victory," said Welk. Against Brighton Wood was equally as effective, totaling 12 points on four of five shooting and a perfect four for four from the free throw line. "We feel that whoever has the open shot should take it," said Wood. 1 was just open and able to hit a couple of 'em." If the Darts continue to spread the shots around and can "hit a couple of 'em," this Cinderella story may be just teginiwu. |
