Show Nautilus is winning name for CD JH group . Space exploration has become an exciting reality for a group of Central Cen-tral Davis Junior High students who were recently named state winners in the junior division of a NASA contest to name a future space shuttle. shut-tle. Eighth grader AmyLyn Dickman read about this contest in a science magazine and then asked her math teacher, Mrs. Bowden, if she would sponsor a group from Central for the contest. Mrs. Bowden got students in her classes interested in the contest, and then the hard work began. This dedicated group of students spent many hours in and out of class doing research to support their shut tle - name, -"Nautilus." These students felt "Nautilus" was a good choice for a space shuttle for many reasons, including the facts that the nautilus sea shell has a spiral appearance which is symbolic of the spiraling nature of the universe uni-verse and also that this is the name of Jules Verne's submarine in the futuristic novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." Included in their award-winning entry were a slide presentation on the history of space flight, an essay on reasons for their name choice, and even an original song. These students anxiously await NASA's announcement of a national winner in May. |
