Photo by Yvonne Corah $4500 for athletics Women's program wins funds The Women's Intercollegiate Program will receive funding and a new director beginning winter quarter. The University women s sports program is now a member of hPe Association for Innate Athletics for Women (AIAWI, a national organization. Of the requested $15,000 total budget, University President Alfred C Emery recently gave women s fnieLllegiate sports $4500 to fund their program. Main concern Susan Taylor, chairman of Organizations Board said of her talk with President Emery His Sin concern was that the budget main coin- continued, was t00,l0WathleticS will be f-vs Some of the sports that will be included in the women's intercollegiate in-tercollegiate program are badminton, bad-minton, basketball, field hockey, golf gymnastics, softball, speed and' synchronized swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Each program needs funds for coaches, lodging, meals, officials, and transportation. Serious competetive sports Miss Taylor said that women's intercollegiate sports is not a group of clubs asking for money. The program is compiled of serious women's competetive sports. "It's essential that next year the money come out of the athletic budget Women's intercollegiate athletics should become a budgetary item. We all pay our athletic fee for intercollegiate rmm wiiniliiniawuwumwwww restricted to just the men," Miss Taylor said. Janet Thurgood, of the staff of the College of Health, has been recommended to be the women's intercollegiate director for the winter quarter. She needs now only to be approved by Institutional Council. When the director does begin her work next quarter she will remain salaried and will be paid by the College of Health. Miss Taylor said she felt that next year the director should be paid from funds from the athletic budget. Included in the director's job next quarter would be coaching one of the competitive teams, making all arrangements for all the teams, while at the same time holding a position as a teacher for the College of Health.
