Lack of time prevented block seating from being used at Saturday's game against New Mexico. The bill, sponsored by Steve Rich, passed the Assembly 29-22-1. Clark Campbell, speaking for the bill, said block seating was the best way of gaining school spirit at games. He said most organizations were for it because it made it easier for them. The cheerleaders were quoted as saying that cheering had never been so good as at the UTEP game when block seating was experimentally used. "Sometimes the individual student doesn't feel like a part of the University because he isn't in an organization and sometimes we increase that feeling with these kinds of activities," said Terry Thomson, speaking against the bill. George Woods and Susan Taylor had previously led the fight against block seating. Clark Campbell began making preparations for block seating for the New Mexico game, but arrangements could not be made. Steve Rich announced that groups who have already applied for blocks do not need to reapply for the Nov. 4 game against Arizona, but should check with ASUU to see if their applications are still on file. New groups should have 20 people and should apply by Wednesday. The drawing for blocks will be held on Thursday when the tickets will be passed out. Individual students can pick up their tickets at the gate on Saturday by presenting an activity card. This year the blocks are scattered , over the student section, but no blocks are inside the goal line. According to Mr. Campbell, 50 percent of the seats between the 20-yard line and the end of student seating are independent seating. Approximately 20 percent of student seats were blocks at the UTEP game. This will be about the same figure for the rest of the season. 1 |
