Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Inequity Editor: The discussion the other week on the Dick Cavett show concerning Nixon's Drug Commission's Report pointed out the inconsistencies involved in its recommendations; that is, making it non-criminal to privately possess and use marijuana but a felony to sell and grow it. Endless arguments could be made for or against this and other findings of the reports, but in the meantime with the laws as they exist, an even more serious inconsistency further discredits the system, in particular the judicial branch. And that is, the degree of severity of the penalty imposed depending on the state and even the county in which the crime is committed, (oincidentally with this report and unfortunately enough, I was busted recently in a very conservative county of a relatively conservative state. Presently, I am being charged with the possession and transportation of less than an ounce of marijuana and am being laced with a possible $299 fine andor six months in jail and the lorfeiture of my 1970 car to the state; all of which will be tried in the above county. Also worth mention is the treatment that occurred following the arrest. I was stripped for search on the road, handcuffed and later put in the county jail with bail set at t500 cash or $1000 property bond, not to be taken lightly by a student, a student who is graduating this spring and has been accepted to graduate school with a possible fellowship. And that particular graduate school being one mainly leading to a government job. But who, let alone the government, will readily hire a person with a criminal record? And then only 40 miles away in another county, to point out a specific example, a friend was stopped by a police officer who removed the marijuana from his friend's car and then told his friend to be on his way. This is way beyond injustice, it's a joke. Name witheld at request Y? Editor: It has been brought to my attention from many people as well as my parents that ESYU is a much better training ground than the University. As I look at the facts, I am also beginning to believe this. When was the last time a University students was shot to death in attempting armed robbery or caught by the FBI for hijacking a plane? Thank goodness for our conservative environment. Tom Hurst Rotten apples Editor: I note that the Student Health and Counseling Center is facing a budget slash of $185,000 while the Athletics will drop a mere $.15,000. Think about this! The football team is sacrificing the catsup poured on steaks guzzled between bet-ween stag movies at local motels. Yet the University is denying counseling to the mentally and emotionally disturbed because these fellow human beings are "expendable" (like rotten apples?). ap-ples?). Then we have administrators ad-ministrators like Tom King who run around and "deplore" violence. This word "expendable" suggests that someone in this administration ad-ministration strongly subscribes to doctrines reminiscent of Hitler's Master Race dogma. If the administration of this University has any semblance of remaining morality, I demand that this glaring obscenity be stopped. Continuation of these morally bankrupt priorities will only prove that this University and the system it perpetuates work best when its members are too mentally and emotionally unfit to respond. Mark Price Believers Editor: We regret that Mr. Nutting (Hotline from Ophir) objects to some of the methods used by Christians in telling people about h love of Cod. Cranted, no method will reach everyone However, the message remains o'mT1 l0VeseY Person so much, he Bave his only Son in order that they might experience the love, joy and peace of knowing him personally. How true it is that he "sure saved us some work" since no amount of human work could or can put us right with Cod. Jesus said, "Do not work for food that spoils; instead, work for the food that lasts for eternal life This food, the Son of Man will give you, because Cod, the Father, has put his mark of approval on him." They asked him then, "What can we do in order to do Cod's works?" )esus answered, "This is the work Cod wants you to do: believe in the one he sent." John 6:27-29. It's true that many things have been clone in the name of Christianity that are obviously not the result of believing in Jesus. So we say don't get hung up about what people are doing and saying about Jesus, but consider the person, life and claims of Jesus Christ himself. We are only beggars telling others where we have found food. For Jesus said to the same people quoted above, "I am the bread of life, he who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35. Robert and Linda Donaldson Don't buy me Editor: All the talk about the legalization of marijuana lately is fine. But it seems as though the "law makers" are making a mountain out of a molehill as usual. So what if a majority of the people in society don't like it. I truly don't believe that people under the influence of marijuana bothers: any way, except for the somebody a long : decided that marijuana Marijuana is as natw: earth. i Personally I feel that -' has helped me to .' communicate better :" crutch or a habit. He ..lesires a personal relationship janiith us, not a bunch of religious , vorks. aim: W Jesus has been working in my hai-ife, He has given me a desire to lack of concern for University community members. Is it that the great thinkers of our world (past and present) are not afflicted by psychological or physical problems? Is it that students, faculty members, and University employes are not afflicted by personal, marital or family problems? Is it that students are adequately financially finan-cially supported to be able to pay the sharply increased costs of services? Is it that we are no longer concerned about maintenance main-tenance (and preventive care) for adequate physical and mental health let alone maintaining the strengths of families? Cutbacks of personnel (and funds) in student services means cutbacks in already overly demanded services. Moving the present central location of the Student Health Service will mean a further decrease in being able to o '. hare this good news with others, er ; tow I also share Christ with leathers, and have seen Cod use jl his sharing to change the lives of jbfithers.
