Show Students discuss 'Issues' issues By KACY TREADWAY Chronicle Staff The results of the fall Contemporary Issues evaluation have been tabulated and the overall picture of the class was favorable. The questionnaires were mailed out to students early in January so that their comments would in no way affect their grade. Sixty questionnaires were returned out of an. enrollment of 280. The results are only as accurate as the sampling of response, but they do contain some interesting in-teresting opinions and suggestions. The big weakness of the questionnaire was that students weren't asked to specify whether they were undergraduates, adult education students or high school teachers. If that information had been given, a survey on the appeal of different speakers to certain groups could have been made. The questionnaire that is distributed spring quarter will include that information. Six of the eight programs presented were rated good or superior by 64 to 84 percent of the students responding. Forty-two students stu-dents would recommend and 15 students would highly recommend the class to other students. On the assigned papers, 86 percent felt they were worthwhile or very worthwhile and eight students stated that they thought the papers were the most worthwhile kind of assignment. Ten people said that they preferred to prepare an oral presentation or a debate. Students were asked to indicate their group number so that each group and group leader could be evaluated separately, and this area of the class received the most critical comments. A fourth of the students felt that the discussion group wasn't effective, the leader wasn't effective and that class members weren't prepared. Some comments com-ments were: "The younger members of the group got off the subject more often than they should have," and "Good participation par-ticipation from teachers, poor from University students." Some general comments were: "Bring speakers that have new and different ideas, not the same old crap." "One of the few meaningful learning experiences available at the University. Puts people in a position of listening to others' opinions which they would not normally do." "This class has great possibilities, but as it stands I was very disappointed in it." "Bring in more conservative speakers." |
