With that k, body, why are you guys so eager to gei y books? , q 2 percent pie-in- And around and around it g oes The facts a re, tha. J considerably the-Skrhi:lSpee:rt5TntSoth Ss, with the advent of the new K??telnK isn't -en breaking even any more. Here's why, in the proverbial nutshell: Start with the mythica. 9.2 PX million dollars, which is the appor .onmen ba.l.ng ou Hospital. The University Hosp.tal ''iped it in with from the University in general, bJXTggeT Now, subtract the University to make the apPOonmenHook bgg er from the remainder about 5 percent for general i U.S. inflation, i.e. higher salaries tor Pre'8'"u , rrpasina income big in this field), decreasing income from donations, rising of educational quality, etc. So we subtract all this, and you know what? We end up , in the ho e a few percent. Beat that! So if you are a student or a faculty or a statt, and you hear about this 9.2 percent myth, don t buy it. There are ways to beat it. First of all, if we can somehow bring the Is. economy under control, general U.S inflation will slow down cons.derably. Special inflation for higher education w I then probably slow down a great deal, but not until a few years later Second put a ceiling on enrollment. Any Un.versity is necessarily an elitist outfit, and it is absurd to think that every man woman and child has a god-given right to be here, especially when the ,ob market waiting for them can't absorb them. Thirdly, divorce the University Hospital entirely from the University, except as far as teaching relationships go. This state does need a medical school somewhere. In short become political, for the time being. Get out there and talk sanity instead of myth. Badger the decision-makers, or if necessary become a decision-maker yourself. But let's not just sit there and gripe. The present ugly situation is largely due to the fact that many more than 9.2 percent of us are used to doing just that. |
