Mr. Brown says: "Odyssey House is like an iron-maiden. ..these tenants are alienated from everybody." Mr. Brown continues that he wants his house to be "fun," and "a community where these people relate." Naughty, naughty Editor: We would like to ask Mr. Gordon for further information regarding the "untouchedness" of the German villages. From whom or what are they untouched? And if he meant untouched by American tourists: naughty, naughty for having touched them. Congratulations for having found "beautiful marble buildings" in West Germany. All of us having lived there for several years do not remember seeing any such buildings in West Germany. Except for the interior of the casinos in Wiesbaden and Baden Baden the only marble building that can be found is part of the Pergamon Museum in East Berlin. It's a comfort to hear that Germans Ger-mans are also "human beings" and that treating them as such "worked ' for Mr. Gordon. Heribert Hinrichs Roger Manwaring Dennis Christenson Sigrid Mayer Tirade Editor: One can normally snub the adolescence of this paper's editorials, but the one of Jan. 25, which so blandly discarded law and order as a significant issue was an insult to the intelligence of the university community. Your argument that crime isn't a problem because a poll showed that a number of people thought it was only a problem in others' neighborhoods is completely fallacious. The growth of crime against people and property . has been so astounding, one wonders who could be so feeble-minded as to regard it as less than a national disaster. The editorial then proceeded into a semi-literate mumbo-jumbo about social welfare that you tack on all your sophomoric tirades, with a host of glittering generalities and simplistic sim-plistic analysis worthy of the boobs who believe you. If you want to talk about law and order, you try making occasional references to reality rather than your thread-bare rhetoric; which can't be stretched much further without revealing the total poverty of your analysis, and is typical of your editorials. The Chronicle has made quite a fuss about all the money being spent on athletics. In terms of absolute value, this year's Chronicle is a pathetic waste of tens of thousands of dollars. The yearbook died from student apathy, the Chronicle should die from student disgust. National statistics show eight of ten graduates of intensive therapy at Odyssey House never return to abusive drug practices. Obviously treatment is not easy. But the house is by no means an "iron-maiden." The return of a hard core addict to reality is not "fun." Residents at Odyssey are not "alienated from everybody," and we do house a community where people can relate. The Odyssey method utilizes an ex-addict staff as a form of positive motivation and guidance. Each resident recognizes his responsibility to help motivate and understand his peers in treatment. Odyssey House is a residential facility. The raw addict is not allowed to return to the negative atmosphere of the street, and then expect to return to the house for treatment. According to the Hennacy House article, ASUU has granted $2,000 to Hennacy, and full support of the program is recommended to students. I question where this large amount of money is being used. To my knowledge, Hennacy House is not presently treating individuals with the ultimate goal of making the addict drug-free. As |
