Show y , Well, you can just kick my bucket... Well, it's time to put your drop in the bucket again. The only problem now is SZe w, meter our three drops, collectively, god-like. ,t n We are pleased to no end at the City Commission race, at least.. .As fa as tne tfV eections. The o7, for whomever he belie.es ,o be .be lesse, of two e.ils. with at least a few aspects of all candidates. lennmgs Phillips, Jr. and Richard Andrew we see as having a rriin.mum potential for response to the young viewpoint Both a, while their records are certainly competent, they are also 'rational In Andrew we see a lack of full-time political experience. While he has been involved in government over a long span of time , has usual been in an advisory or accessory capacity. Jennings Phillips, r. former 5 treasurer, seems to us to be over-specialized. We fear that ,r . office he would put his talents to work mostly on money matters, to the unfortunate un-fortunate exclusion of other considerations. The other two commission candidates, Steve Harmsen and Steve Holbrook are in some respects the complete opposites o Andrew and Phillips Both are young, relatively liberal, and inclined less toward tradition than toward innovation and creative solutions. Harmsen s record however, seems to us to indicate a history of expedience, rather than conviction And his stand on law and order is too punative for our consciences. He seems to lack understanding. Steve Holbrook, the other young candidate, has too much going against him to make an effective commissioner He has been radical enough to make no small number ot enemies in this city, and his term would be one brick u all after another Acid to this fact that he has very little formal experience, and to us he becomes unacceptable. Instead of endorsing any specific candidates, we are forced to endorse instead a set of ideals. We would like to see a commissioner who will toss aside traditional considerations and be genuinely responsive to our interests as young people. There must be minimum compromise and maximum understanding. There must be maximum experience and effectiveness. We can only ask that individual voters search out the candidates they feel live up to these principles. Political considerations aside, today will see a lot of drops fall into a few buckets. With any conscience at all, the young vote can be the drop heard 'round the world. Or around the city, anyway. |
