Show Arizona tennis teams challenge Ute netters The University of Utah tennis team will return to conference action this week when they host Arizona State University on Friday and the University of Arizona on Saturday. Both dual meets are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on the new University courts. Harry James' charges boosted their season record to 5-1 with a 6-3 win over Pan American University over the weekend. Five of their six opponents thus far have been ranked among the nation's top fifteen collegiate teams. In Arizona State, the Redskins will be facing the toughest Sun Devil team in the past ten years. They are led by John Fort and Hans Nordstrom. Fort has posted victories over such outstanding players as Zdravko Mincek of Brigham Young, F. D. Robbins of Utah and Humphrey Hose of Corpus Christi this year. Arizona, Saturday's opponent will be one of the top contenders for the WAC Championships next month on their home courts in Tucson. The Wildcat's only loss this season have come at the hands of Southern California, UCLA and Trinity. Arizona boasts three of the intermoun-tain intermoun-tain areas top players in Bud Guion, Butch Palmer and Craig Hardy. Hardy has defeated Paul Gerkin, the nation's 14th ranked singles player this season. James stressed the importance of this weekend competition because of the seedings for the WAC Championships. Acknowledging the possibility of capturing the conference crown. James said that their hopes will rest with the pairings and the only way to have a bargaining point is to make good showings in dual competition with conference opponents. Steve Krulevitz and F. D. Robbins will be playing either number one or two in the singles competition, followed by Laury Hammel, Bill Bennion, Bob Schoavers, Kent Woodard and Robert Young. Woodard and Robbins will team up for Utah's strongest entry in the doubles competition. The pair has lost only one doubles match this year. |
