Show Coffee and Politics Walter J. Hickel on campus f : : ' t vx I i V-- WALTER J. HICKEL S formpr sprrpt.irv of interior Former Secretary of the Department of Interior, Walter J. Hickel will visit the campus Thursday and Friday as politican-in-residence sponsored by the Hinckley Institute. Mr. Hickel, noted conservationist of natural and human resources, will participate in an ecology seminar with students, visit an American government govern-ment class and lunch with political science students on Thursday. Thursday evening he will address the winter quarter banquet of Pi Sigma Alpha, political science honorary fraternity. His speech is entitled, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House." At Coffee and Politics On Friday, Mr. Hickel will join a Hinckley Institute breakfast with University officials and officers of the College Republicans and Young Democrats. He will also talk informally with students during the "Coffee and Politics" session on Thursday at 9:55 a.m. in OSH 255. Mr. Hickel will conclude his Utah visit with a keynote address at an Environment Week Conference, Con-ference, Friday at 10 a.m. in the Terrace Ballroom. Against Commercialization Under his administration, Secretary Hickel interceded inter-ceded to prevent commercialization of scenic areas and strongly advocated a multi-billion dollar program pro-gram for urban parks. He also advocated stringent policies to minimize pollution form offshore gas explorations into effect and promised to "prosecute "prose-cute those who pollute" the nation's waters. A Kansas native, Mr. Hickel developed a business in Alaska and later became governor of Alaska in 1966. |
