Show 'Compromise needed in Mid East' I I j -J I i - Dr. J.B. Mayfield, assistant professor pro-fessor of political science, said peace must be established in the Middle East, as he headed a panel discussion on "The Middle East Today" in the Union Ballroom Thursday. He said, "Both sides tend to prove that their side is right and the other side is wrong." But both sides seem to be suffering from a mirror syndrome-you can't trust the other side, you can't let down your defenses, they want to take our land from us. But political truth is not one-sided and neither side has a monopoly on truth. Western Colony He said, "The Arabs see Israel as a strong, skillful, productive nation which wants to push them to the Nile." And, in fact, "is nothing more tJian a Western colony." Israel sees the Arabs as "unanimously "unani-mously opposed to Israel because of their leaders and they want to drive Israel into the sea." USSR Increasingly Involved The USSR has become increasingly increas-ingly involved with the Arabs during dur-ing the past few years with military advisors, planes, ships and missiles. The U.S. is there with Israel. If, in the distant future, war were to break out, the U.S. because of "commitments" might have to send American fighting men into the conflict. Dr. Mayfield offered a possible solution: 1) Both sides will have to agree on certain boundaries, 2) The ability of Israel to defend its boundaries should be certain and 3) A DMZ should be set up as a buffer zone. Magda Abou-Saif, a member of the panel speaking for the Arabs, questioned the right of Israel to take Arab land frorn ., k one and oS. people homeless.
