Show Redskins split road trip with Rams and Cowboys BY RICK SORENSEN Sports Editor LARAMIE, WYO.-With one of their more crucial wins to date, the University Redskins subdued Wyoming's Cowboys 83-79 with the consistent foul shooting of forward John Dearman in the last three minutes of the game. The Utes kept a couple of baskets up on the Pokes, enough to control the game but not to feel extremely confortable. Repeatedly Re-peatedly the Cowboys closed the narrow gap to one or two and sometimes they took a momentary momen-tary lead. However, after losing to a spectacular Colorado State five the night before the Utes needed this win to remain at par in the conference standings. ' - j Utah appeared in fine position for a breakaway second half. Supposed Sup-posed appearances became figments fig-ments of one's imagination as Wyoming came back in hopes of putting their foes in a questionable ques-tionable position for the Western Athletic Conference crown. Scrambling to keep the game close, the Pokes caused Utah to foul, which put Eddie Trail on the bench early in the contest with four personal fouls and eventually sidelined his substitute, Jimmie Wright, with the same problem. Throughout the second half the Cowboys stayed close until with five minutes to go Peaches Laster put the Utes up by one at 68-67. Picking up an additional three points, the Utes went into the final three minutes with a four point lead. Wyoming decided to foul when the Jack Gardner five entered the soft stall, but they picked on the wrong man. Utah's last six points came from the hands of Dearman as he was fouled three consecutive times causing a 1-1 situation. Keeping a cool head, the junior forward made both ends of the three situations to preserve the Redskins' four point lead and victory. . FT' COLLINS, COLO'-Facing the finest defensive machine of the year Utah lost their fourth conference game to a polished Colorado State team, 101-86, last Friday night. In the early minutes the two teams traded baskets until the Rams put two successive fast breaks together to go ahead 17-13. From that point on the Redskins were not seriously in the game although they came close to catching their opponents a couple of times in the first half and once in the second. All three times they moved to within two points only to see the Rams explode again and jump back out to a nine point margin. Utah cannot seriously be faulted for the loss as they ran right into a full-fledged ambush. Colorado State put together the most potent defensive effort this conference has seen in years. Their man to man pattern caused Utah to throw away the ball time after time. The Utes found shooting shoot-ing difficult also as more often Forward John Dearman sank seven foul pitches in a pressure situation to give Utah a 82-79 win over the Pokes. than not their shots were blocked.
