It seems that when the j' Ute basketball men lose, the ' wrestlers win, and when the hard-t, hard-t, court men win, well you guessed k it the matmen lose. At leas: this is :' what has happened the past two weekends. When the basketball team lost at Albequerque, the wrestlers put V on a fine show and shut down the ! Lobo wrestlers. Saturday night the basketball team won, and the matmen, following the pattern lost to Mankato State, the number four ranked team in the college l!l division, 17-15. There were some highlights for " - the Utes, however. Charles (Dave) f Shepherd, probably Utah's best wrestler pound for pound, again proved he is one of the best in the country in the 167 lbs. class by decisioning Stan Pesch of Mankato Man-kato 13-2. Scott Tennis, also one of the bright spots on Utah's mat team in the 177 lbs. class decisioned Steve Johnson of Mankato 5-2. Other results were: 118 Gary Frank (M) dec. Sam Arishita (U) 9-7; 126, Balvino Irizarry (U) dec. Scott Evans (M) 13-8; 134, Ken Stockdale (M) dec. Frank Iacobazzi (U) 14-5; 142, Bruce Carnes (U) dec. Wally Percon (M) 7-1; 150, Mike Medeacoll (M) pinned Mike Ptaschinski (U) in 1:16; 158, Dave Cummings (M) dec. Greg Valley (U) 6-5; 190, Joe Davis (U) dec. Dan Cummings (M) 2-1; heavyweight, Dennis Pierro (M), dec. Kurt Bellock (U) 4-2. Utah's record now stands at 6-3. Coach Marv Hess said he is pleased with the team's showing so far, but said they will have to be ready for this weekend. Coach Hess isn't kidding. Thursday the Utes leave for Oregon Ore-gon to participate in a three day meet with three of the top schools in the country. Oregon State, number two in the country; Portland State, number six, and University of Washington, number seven, are the other teams in the meet. |
