Show Ten years behind forefront of modern America It's really true. Salt Lake City is 10 years behind the forefront of modern America. Case in point: City Commissioner Commis-sioner Catmull thinks he is getting right with it by outlawing long hair on his employees. He apparently appar-ently doesn't want to be classified among those "permissive leaders in our country who don't have what it takes to crack down when a crackdown is needed." But Catmull is 10 years late. Ten years ago the image of the unswerving, man-of-action was really a good bet. Now however, there is a decided movement to recognize and protect the rights of the individual a policy incompa-; incompa-; tible with the traditional hardliner of yesteryear. P Zeitgeist is a word used to refer ( jo the prevailing mood of a soci-Jus soci-Jus I ety or culture at a given period in 3 : history. Perhaps , the most likely ine I philosophy to emerge as the zeit-i zeit-i ) geist for tomorrow's America is ; that of individuality: the right to ''0! pursue one's personal desires com- . pletely unfettered by any legal i body or controlling force in so far as that pursuit does not limit anyone else in their pursuit of I their desires. lle' ! The common phrase for this lc" ! philosophy is "do your own !L ' thing." Now this is simply an updated restatement of the origin-' origin-' at demand of the founders of this r0 country, namely, that each person IWS be guaranteed the right to the '"" "pursuit of happiness." ' So the point is, if a certain city 1 employee wants to grow his hair long, where does his superior find the justification for demanding that it be cut shorter, on penalty of dismissal if he doesn't?
