Due to the fact that USC is in the same conference with UCLA, their basketball program gets less credit than it probably deserves. Some experts believe that this may be the year that the Trojans turn from being a bridesmaid to a bride, and they would like to start on that road to glory with a win over Utah. The Utes, however, are in kind of the same boat, Seeking a Western West-ern Athletic Conference (WAC) championship this year after one so subtly eluded them last season, they would like nothing better than to knock off the Trojans Thursday and the Aggies on Saturday. With three top returning letter-men letter-men and several outstanding newcomers, new-comers, the Redskins just might do it too, if they can put it altogether. With Mike Newlin on the guard line, Utah should have no trouble matching the offensive output of the Trojan little men. This which will have to be leveled as one of the toughest opening weeks in history for a Ute basketball team. Not only do they open their season with the Trojans who are seventh ranked nationally, na-tionally, but their second game on Saturday is against old rival Utah State, ranked ninth in the country, coun-try, in Logan. This season's opening against such strong basketball powers as . these, is a far cry from Ute teams j of old who used to open against ' such hoop "powers" as Montana St. and Gonzaga. Guard Paul Westphal leads the Trojan talent parade this season. All Pacific Eight Conference last season as a Sophomore, Westphal averaged 14.5 points per game. His running mate in the back-court, back-court, Dennis Layton, dropped in 16.6 points per game last year. This duo gives Southern California a threatening offensive punch from the guard line. Boyd and his crew suffered a setback however when top soph-. more center, Bruce Clark, had an operation which will sideline him for the season. However, the Trojans still have |
