"Until you know where you came from, you can't know where you're going. Unless you know your history you can't look forward to your future." To remedy the Chicano's deficit de-ficit in knowledge of his history, Chicano teachers are presenting lessons in a private school in California funded only by the Chicanos themselves, Gonzalez aid. Nowhere else can the children chil-dren learn their ancestors were astronomers, mathematicians and intelligent. Chicanos. The togetherness in aiming for equality will help them all move ahead together. Cosmic Race "We are all the cosmic race," he said. Many races are bound together to-gether with the common traditions tra-ditions of the Chicano. Indians from the Orient, from the south, from the north, mestizos of Spanish and Indian heritage, all are Chicanos and will join together to-gether finally, he said. No matter where a Chicano goes in the northwestern hemisphere, hemis-phere, he will find relatives. The wide network of relations helps to unify the race. Chicanos live from the tip of Peru to northern Michigan and are always a minority. But even in neighborhoods 90 per cent Chicano, Chi-cano, Anglos usually run everything, every-thing, he said. Some areas have become exceptions. Gonzalez told of some community parks handed over to Chicanos. The properties are clean and well-run andstil!stay that way because of'community protest or stand up for their rights any longer, Gonzalez said. "We have to control our own destiny and our own lives." Community support can help. The Chicano movement is trying to train leaders to help the people control their destiny. Chicano Chi-cano organizations are instilling pride for the heritage of the people and building leaders. Not leaders of organizations but leaders lead-ers to success, Gonzanez explained. ex-plained. Mexican-Americans haven't been taught of any Chicano Chi-cano successes, so the movement is trying to show them how to create their own. The movement needs young people strong not only in body, but also in intelligence. The Chicanos Chi-canos are creating leadership for their own groups and politically, as well. But the leaders arc still part of the Chicano family. And it will be a close family if Gonzalez' final admonition is followed. That being, "We have to take care of our family."
