Water polo team drubs Cats again The University "water tread-ers" tread-ers" swam all over the hapless BYU Cougars last Friday evening enroute to an 18 to 9 triumph. This was the final dual match for coach Dave Gray's water polo team and the victory enabled them to complete the season with an even record of six wins and six losses. Coach Gray expressed that Ihis was the best performance displayed dis-played by his team for the whole year. He also feels as if the various skills learned on their California road trip are really now coming through as the team gets tougher every day. The Cougars trailed throughout the match as the Redskins played ball control and led at the quarters; quar-ters; 5-1, 94, 14-5, clinching the victory at 18-9. There were many instances where the Ute tankers stole the ball and proved to be very strong, coordinated, and well-balanced team. The scoring effort proved to be well-balanced as nine different players added to the goal producing pro-ducing drive. Gary Conrad and Ron Shephard led the scorers with four goals apiece. Freshman Tom Rawlings contributed four assists and three more goals. This was Rawlings' last match of the year because he had previously attended atten-ded a junior college for part of a semester and is ineligible to participate par-ticipate in the NCAA tournament to be held next week-end. Rounding Round-ing out the scoring was Rick O'Toole with two points, Steve Elsnab, Ron Sebert, Russ Lauber, Steve Hamann, and Spence Mortenson with one point each. The junior varsity team of Jim Raspenson put together a balanced attack of ball control in the third period and a bit of game winning "keep away" in the final quarter to outlast and outclass the Kittens from Provo by a close score of 7-6. This was the first time this year that the Papooses have beaten BYU and left them a respectable record of four wins and two losses. This week the University water poolsters will prepare for the NCAA No. 7 tournament to be held in Salt Lake City. A number of universities from though out the Rocky Mountain area will be entered in the competition. Some of the outstanding schools that will be competing are: Colorado, Air Force, New Mexico, and Arizona. Coach Gray feels that his team will be seeded about sixth in the tournament and should fare very well. |
