Nets BY BRUCE WOODBURY Sports Writer The Utah Stars, shaking off a r first half, rallied to down the Lprisingly tough New York Nets I, 4.105 in an ABA game played in the Salt PaJace last night. The Stars, who grabbed their ourth win in as many starts, were jairi paced by their great center, Zelmo (BigZ) Beaty, who popped i, 30 points to walk off with high point honors. Nevv York, supposedly handicapped by an ankle injury to toil star Rick Barry, who didn"t make the trip, gave the Stars all fey could handle in the first half f the game. Led by their two little guards, Bill Melchionni and Levern Tart, the Nels had the Stars in their power throughout most of the first tw0 quarters, taking a one-point lead with them into the bier room at halftime, 59-58. Melchionni, who scored 17 points in the first half and 25 for the night, was great. With his great passes and sharp, quick moves he made the fans forget that iomebody named Barry even played on the New York team. Tart also was superb as he potted 5 points to tie Melchionni for high point honors. Led by Beaty, and guards Jeff Congden and Donnie Freeman, Mi put on an offensive show oulscoring the Nets 31-19 in die third period to take a 89-78 lead ' nith them into the fourth quarter, Are they coasted home to victory. Freeman looked very good as he scored 19 points. Red Robbins and Wayne Hightower, Utah's strength on the boards, both fanned 16 points to give the Stars a balanced offensive attack. Star s Wayne Hightower (35) lays up shot over New York's Ed Johnson (20), as part of the 6,776 fans look on. Utah grabbed a 114-105 victory over the Nets Thursday night. |
