Show Play everyone WAC scheduling doesn't insure fair competition BY DAVE MASON Sports Writer The football season may be over, but it has left one probl the problem of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) schedT lost the WAC Football Title because we played only six Utal games, while Arizona State played seven. Thus a loss bv A CWerenc( meant less, then a loss by Utah. ' y M120na Stale At the end of the season both teams had lost one ram Arizona State edged out Utah by one-half game due to the f ' Arizona State beat doormat Colorado State. aet lh The point is that for a fair and representive conference ea team must meet every team in the conference. Thus there a conference champion who had bested most of the other- f W0Ul(i uia teams in t) conference. What If The conference inadequacy can be shown by the following ex Colorado State only played four conference games this season?' lost all four because they were a poor team. However, suppose' CI rado State had been a fair team, say equal to Brigham Yonim tT (!:".::: have beaten Texas El Paso and Brigham Young with lim trouble. Wyoming could have fallen prey to Colorado State after it i t its 14 players. The only team left on Colorado State's schedule was Arizona State and with a little luck, such as Arizona had with Utah they could have beaten the Sun Devils. Thus Colorado State would stand undefeated without playing either Utah or New Mexico. This may be stretching things a little, but the fact still remains Hat the WAC Council doesn't have the insight or the wisdom to forseewho is going to be strong in the years come. Colorado State could have just as easily been scheduled with the weaker conference teams like New Mexico, Arizona, Brigham Young and Texas El Paso this year. ' Ten Year in Advance Along these same lines the WAC is also missing the boat by setting up the football schedule for ten years in advance. At the present time the WAC 'teams are completely scheduled up until 1979. This makes for an infexible situation. A lot can happen in ten years. Teams could be added or dropped from the conference, a team could be suspended, a number of things could happen to foul up the schedule for many years to come. In the next four years, WAC teams only meet representives of major conference such as the Big Ten or Pacific Eight, seven times. In order to change the image of the WAC being a weak conference, WAC teams have to meet teams from these major conferences. The scheduling in the WAC is inadequate in several areas and It must be changed now to eliminate problems which will undoubtably result from the present system. - ( .
