Show Letters to the EdiroR as "subtly pro-communist" misleads mis-leads his readers. The description implies that the speech was pro-communist, pro-communist, period, and fails to give sufficient weight to the major thrust of the discussion. Mr. Scheer voiced support for nationalist revolutionaries who have taken up the banner of coni-munism coni-munism because if offers their movements the most promise of success. Communist idealogy prevails pre-vails in local situations because it identifies with the problems and the passions of the people. To suggest sug-gest that communism dupes the unwitting masses into joining "its" cause is wishful thinking. With communism and nationalism inextricably joined to one another, attempts to resist communism com-munism obviously resist nationalism, national-ism, and doom themselves to failure. M. DALE FRITZ Misdirected Editor: The local version of this month's moratorium seemed mis-directed to me. I'll say at the outset that I didn't attend and here's why: I'm not associated with S.D.S. or the United Front, so I had to ask a young lady occupying the moratorium booth in the Union Building what was scheduled for the moratorium. Such a cheerful, young thing! "Oh, we're going to have a rock band!" she gushed. Well and good: We'll dance on the graves of the 340,000 people dead in this war. Knowing that the rock band just couldn 't be the "tour de force" of the moratorium, I further fur-ther asked who was speaking. "Allan Sherman!" came the reply. Well, I'm glad that people from the entertainment field are against the war, but for a comedian to be the headliner at our moratorium, i gifted and sincere though he may be, seems flippant and about as relevant to an intelligent approach to ending the war as a rock band. There are two things that shouldn't be joked about. One is war and the other is peace. One is atrocious and the other is sacred, and when the orgainzers of future moratoriums deal with the problems prob-lems in that light, I'll again devote as much of my time and as many of my resources as possible. To persuade the thousands of local people who are against the war, but reticent about actively protesting, to get out and, as Jeff Fox recently said "...form a constituency con-stituency which will be listened to," we must refrain from treating our protest programs as social functions. O.H. NYGAARD Food protest Editor: During this year, the "in" thing to do is to protest, moratorium style. It occurs to us that many protesters scream and complain about the same old issues. We have decided that there are many neglected issues basic to all human rights; light food! Our stomachs scream in protest. We as dorm students stu-dents are highly disgusted with Ballif food service. Everyday we ask ourselves: "What are we doing here?" Obviously we don't go there to eat and enjoy a relaxing meal. Much of the food is unfit for human consumption. The vegetables vegeta-bles are either soft and mushy (steamed to death) or hard as pellets (under-cooked). In the meat department, we have a choice of either: a) beef b) chicken or c) mystery meat. The salads look like they have been stored in solitary confinement for 18 days. Breakfast is another dimension di-mension in gourmet delight. The scrambled eggs taste like cottage cheese painted yellow and the toast is "out of sight." About the only things that are edible are the milk and water, because the staff can't possibly ruin them. Whenever When-ever asked about the chefs' earlier working status, we reply: "They used to shovel garbage and didn't change jobs, only locations!" How can we participate in other moratoriums on an ulcerated ulcer-ated stomach? We think a moratorium mora-torium should be organized on Ballif Food Service. Should we encounter en-counter opposition from the manager and his horde, we will give him his choice of either being thrashed soundly with a wet noodle or invitated to duel with hard rolls at seven paces. Dorm students arise! Tyranny will be suppressed!! FRED HAWKES JEFF ROSS Scheer's speech Editor: The reporter who characterized Robert Scheei's address to the moratorium crowd Saturday night |
