Show School held Monday; no holiday The Executive Committee of the Faculty Council met Wednesday in emergency session and voted not to make Monday a University holiday. Classes will be held as usual and students, faculty and staff are invited to participate as much as possible in the national festivities while on campus. President Nixon had previously proclaimed Monday a National Day of Participation to observe the Apollo 11 moon landing. He ordered that nonessential federal government offices be closed and he urged state and local government, govern-ment, schools, and private enterprise enter-prise to close for the day. Governor Rampton, after re ceiving official word of the President's Pres-ident's proclamation, declared Monday a state holiday. Influencing the faculty decision to hold classes Monday were the combined facts that Summer Quarter is already too short, Freshman orientation is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday and that Thursday is a holiday. University President James C. Fletcher arrives in Salt Lake this morning from Washington D.C. and Cape Kennedy. He has the authority to reverse the Faculty Council's decision and declare Monday a University holiday if he wishes, but he is expected to go along with the decision. |
