Show Karate tourney in Salt Palace ends Saturday Bill Wallace, of Ball State University, won the title "Champion of Champions" at the Karate tournament in the Salt Palace Saturday night. Wallace came to the meet holding the title of Midwest Champion. All competitors in the tournament hold some form of karate championship, thus giving rise to the title of first place in Saturday's meet. The champions of Canada and Mexico competed in the meet. Because of the deadly nature of karate, as demonstrated by some board breaking before the tournament, the blows must be "pulled", or held just short of actually hitting one's opponent. Two competitors were temporarily immobilized by blows that accidentally landed, but both were able to continue, and Al Decascos of Honolulu Hawaii went on to take second place. It was announced that Steve S anders, who had been undefeated, had to leave to catch a plane because he would loose his job if he was not at work by 2:30 a.m. Before Descascos and Wallace fought the final bout for the championship, they announced that whoever won would give the boat that was a major part of the grand prize to Sanders. For this, they received a standing ovation from the audience. The other portion of the grand prize which Wallace won, is a trip to either Japan or Europe. The tournament was not held in the manner of other more polished sports, i.e. Sanders having to leave, and the audience needing further explanation to appreciate what was going on, but the level of sportsmanship was very high, and the demonstrations were very interesting. |
