Show Voice of the people Film protest Editor: I want to register a protest against the film called "Communist Blueprint for Conquest" shown by the Middle East Center Films on Tuesday, Jan. 28. I have been attending these showings for the last six months and was under, the impression that they were documentaries of general interest and unbiat-ed reporting. That is what they have been until today. This picture was a propaganda film made by the Dept. of State for the Armed Forces (in 1955, at that). It was unbelievably crude-just in case the words didn't penetrate our minds, there were cartoons, in which all the "bad guys" were protrayed as beetle-browed thugs. There must be plenty of films about communism that would be more objective than this handout. It is insulting and inexcusable to show something like this to anyone, particularly to a group of adults at a university. The person or persons who selected this film should be censured. Improvement of existing roads would be more beneficial. This road, proposed by the Conservation Committee would connect all the existing scenic areas in southern Utah. As for a wilderness, the areas included in the Monuments are not wilderness. In a wilderness area no roads can be built and no motorized vehicles are allowed. It can be entered only on foot or horseback. Furthermore, grazing can be permitted in a wilderness area if grazing was allowed previously. Mr. Wintch, I believe you would do well to look into the goals of the Conservation Committee. Next time get some facts before you start taking wild potshots at a group that had nothing to do with the additions to the Monuments. If the municipality housed the same proportion of its citizens in dormitories as the University does its students, the corporation's costs would rise steeply, as would its need for buildings if the city were to accommodate the same proportion of its residents in city-owned and operated buildings as the University does its daytime and night time students for the same number of hours each day. B. Wissman Committee defense Editor: In his Tuesday Chronicle letter Richard Wintch gave a "rational" view of the recent controversy over the extension of the National Monuments in southern Utah. In so doing he maligned several men and attacked an organization, the Wasatch Mountain Club Conservation Committee. All are greatly concerned about the future of this state. Several points are clear from his letter. He has a position to defend and will use any irrational argument to defend it, regardless of the facts. He has no idea of the goals of the Wasatch Mountain Club Conservation Committee, and finally, he does not understand the functional definition of the term wilderness area. First neither Dr. Muliak nor Dr Nelson are members of the Conservation Committee. Second, it is true that the cattlemen in the past greatly abused much land by over-grazing. It is also true, as Wintch points out, that many ranchers realize this and are attempting to right past wrongs. As for the Wasatch Mountain Club Conservation Committee, to my knowledge, they have never made an official statement concerning the additions to the two mounuments. They were in no way associated with these additions, as was no one else in Utah. The major project of the Conservation Committee is the Escalante Wilderness proposal. Th,s proposal calls for the establishment of a wilderness area Fhl?Wnld encmpass the Escalante River canyon. This proposal would block the building of the trans-Escalante highway which b of limited value to residents of the area. |
