Show EmnEmmmmNmM A Marine's duty Editor: I am a student at this University under a Marine Corps scholarship. I have read Steve Wayda's column and am disgusted with his reasoning. He has stated the girl in question looked "too innocent, too naive to know what she was doing." This may be true; however, because of the negligence of the Marine in question one of his own group was killed. An individual in the above situation may act as the private did if and only if his own life is at stake-but if the lives of his comrades are in danger it is his responsibility to remove that danger. Instead of accusing the Marine Corps of murder and other atrocities it might be well to remember a few of the following facts, and to ask the question-if this child was too naive to know what she was doing, then who gave her the grenade? In this month's Readers Digest there is an article exposing Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Cong movement as murderers that even excell the Nazis of WWII in the "art" of atrocities. In all that I have read or heard I have yet to see the V.C. perform one act of mercy or see the V.C. giving one basket of rice to a starving village, but in numerous cases it has been shown how U.S. doctors and corpsmen give medical help to the people, or how the Marine Corps or Army send a battalion to help villagers collect their rice for the first time in years, or how the U.S. government sends advisors to help the people grow more, or how schools and hospitals are being built with U.S. money. The V.C. have shown that they will use any means to control the country-kill village officials, burn schools, kill teachers and kill or mutilate those that "have the audacity to remain neutral." When one examines the facts one must reach a conclusion that those who uphold the Viet Cong movement as a shining light are either very naive, very stupid or communistic controlled. Robert Ernst Sgt. USMC Sincere challenge Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to extend my deepest appreciation to Sylvia Kronstadt for the journalistic courage, integrity and thoroughness she displayed in her report on migrant labor in Utah (Chronicle, Oct. 30). I wish also to comment on David A. Moore's letter-to-the-editor (Nov. 6) criticizing my article "Impressions," reflections of my experiences with the Utah migrant labor problem. Yes, Moore, I agree with you in your opinion that my language was angry and taunting. For I am both angered with and taunted by a society that preaches humanism for all just one day a week and denies it all seven. Impressions are feelings, Moore, and surely you can't criticize me for expressing what I felt. s As for the comment that my article is relatively unproductive, that is for you and your fellow readers to decide. If you want to make it productive, forget your sympathy and replace it with empathy aM artion. I challenge you to join my compatriots and me m leading the "constructive action" that will "inject a measure ol humanism" into the way Utah treats its migrants. For it is only you and I and our friends, and not some personage in some part of our or another city, or in some office building that will make the humanism we preach a reality. To you, Miss Kronstadt, a sincere thanks, and to you, Moore, an equally sincere challenge. Kerry Segal Dorm dwellers Editor: As women students living in the Van Cott apartments, we feel that the rules imposed on us by women students, (most of whom do not live in the dorms) are much too restrictive and unfair. We feel that rules regulating our activities should be made by students familiar with the circumstances of dorm life. These students should be dorm students of at least sophomore standing. We feel that when we attend college, we are mature enough to make rules for ourselves. Also, most of the rules are much stricter than those that are enforced at home and that if our parents feel we are old enough and mature enough to be on our own, then the University shouldn't become a policeman of its students. Most of the rules we live under are made by women living in their own homes, without worry of being locked out at 11 p.m. and then having to pay for it before Standards Board. Do they like showing authority over us by making us stick to rules they don't have and probably never will? We need and want a change, and we're going to get it. Lee Banks Kathie Monson Margie Smith A Place to live Editor: Anarchy is not yet dead, even though God may be. While Ammon Hennessy has given up the operation of the free bed and board bit down by the railroad tracks, known as Joe Hill House of Hospitality, another has risen to carry the flag. Yours in haste, The Gypsy Guru Marine story Editor: As a recently discharged Marine sergeant, I can not accept every statement that was made in the article by Steve Wayda in the Chronicle, Nov. 7. A Marine who is a deserter cannot be expected to give all the "real" reason for his desertion. But to give the majority of the blame to some fictional assassination team is asinine. As stated, the men of Force Recon are the elite fighting men of the Marine Corps, but nowhere in their Table of Organization is their such a team known as FRAT (Force Recon Assassination Team). Also to state that the situation n Vietnam "somewhat different than Force Recon has been gained Is way off base Pn Recon has been ?.
