Even the usually sure-footed Jim Sears was befuddled by the powerful Cowboy defense as he failed on an extra point attempt for the first time this season. "Did Fine Job" The Redskin defense, despite the final score, did a good job of containing the potent Wyoming offensive attack. "The whole group did a fine job," commented head coach Bill Meek. Lead by linebackers Fred McFarren and Larry Stone, and the strong rush of ends Norm McBride and Gary Kerl, the Utes forced Wyoming into some mistakes of their own. The Cowboys were held to only one sustained scoring drive, that one coming late in the third By Greg Fowler Staff Writer LARAMIE.WYO. Beating the Wyoming football team at home is like trying to appeal a parking ticket at the University Traffic Division, there just ain't no way. At least that's the way it appeared last Saturday, as the Wyoming Cowboys out battled the Redskins 20-9 making the Utes the 16 consecutive team to fall victim in the Pokes' Memorial Stadium. The Cowboys have a lot going for them when they perform before the hometown fans. The awesome Wyoming football reputation of intimidating, hard-hitting play alone is enough to start the opposition wondering if victory is possible. When combined with the thousands of "Cowboy Joe" singing fans, however, there is a special atmosphere and spirit in the cold Laramie air that forces visiting teams into both mental and physical errors. The Utah offense was easily contained during the first 15 minutes of play. Coach Meek realized the problems and made some half time corrections. . We were making some mistakes m the line that allowed penetration to Groth. I think our adjustments helped the boys do a better job in the second half," said Meek. The Redskins came out of the locker room and made a game of it. The offensive line now opening holes for Ute runners and Groth, with time to throw, began to connect with his aerial efforts. They narrowed the Cowboy lead to one point and before the final gun the Pokes were given all they could handle. Early in the third quarter Thomas broke free of the double coverage the Pokes had been applying. Groth connected with the surehanded receiver for a 51 yard gain and the only Ute touchdown. |
