Show Original Free U started by radicals By Dave Partenheimer Staff Writer The Free University began at Lane Seminar a 100 years ago when a group of outraged students set up classes dealing with the timely problems. In 1961, a leftist group from the University of New York set up a free university as a protest measure and propaganda device. Free Universities are located at San Francisco State College, University of Berkeley, Hampshire College and other major universities across the country. In many colleges they are built along a tradition of protest devised to undermine the established universities. On other campuses they work as a supplement university. Free U Isn't Radical The Free University on this campus is not a radical, break-away group. Free University works closely with the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) and faculty. Last year's studentbody president, John Kesler, asked Lee Burnham and Steve Gunn to investigate the possibilities of the Free University. Through their efforts, Free University was established and financed by ASUU. The Free University must live down the image of being a protest group. The Free University on this campus is an experiment in learning not a class in revolution. Choses Own Members The Free University is a student-faculty organization. The Free University Council, consisting of 4 to 6 students, 4 to 6 faculty, the ASUU president and the Dean of Students, decides Free University policy. The Free University Council chooses its own members who , serve for two years. The Free University's Constitution says it is responsible to the University community. , The Free University Council selects one of its members to serve as i the executive secretary, who takes charge of class scheduling, public I relations and calling the Free University Council into session once a quarter. The executive secretary selects members of the executive committee who aid in scheduling and general operation. The main concern of the Free University is building an image of optimism rather than protest. The purpose of the Free University is to allow students to learn through different methods and points of view The Free University is trying to take a positive approach to deal wit' today's pertinent problems by working with the establishe University. |
