It was not unusual last year to see him making the saving tackle on the other side of the field. Running down fleet halfbacks is unusual for average lineman but not for McBride. Kerl is a definite candidate for post season honors this year. He looked extremely impressive in the opening games of the 1967 season before being sidelined with injuries in the third game. He is back at full strength and should have a great season. He has good pursuit and is a tooth-jarring hitter. He has a special fondness for getting to the enemy quarterback, and he accomplished the feat with amazing regularity. The presence of two class defensive ends stablizes the entire unit and takes the pressure off the rest of the Ute defensive squad. Both boys are looking forward to fine seasons and should be near the front of the line when post season awards are passed out. By Greg Fowler Staff Writer Lately, an interview with Utah's Head Coach Bill Meek was like talking with the original pessimist. Coach Meek knows the problems of rebuilding a football team from the coaching staff up and is being extra careful about building up any false hopes in the Utah fans. Recently, however, when interviewed in Nebraska prior to Utah's clash with the Cornhuskers, Coach Meek could no longer resist just a little praise for his two fine defensive ends. Norm McBride, (6-3, 235), and Gary Kerl, (6-3, 220), are both outstanding defensive performers who anchor the Redskin defensive unit, the one aspect of Utah football that is low on Coach Meek's list of problem positions. Finest Defensive Ends All-WAC lineman McBride and running mate Kerl are without question two of' the . finest, defensive ends in the Western; Athletic Conference (WAC). McBride had ., an outstanding ... season in '67 after' transferring to " Utah- from East Los Angeles Junior College. He is tenacious, Redskin defensive standouts Gary Kerl and Norm McBride will provide the backbone for the Utah defense this season. Both boys are in line for post season honors, andcjShould give Ute fans something to cheer about this fall. |
