' """"" ' ' "( A letter containing some unauthorized unauth-orized signatures was sent to near- ly two thousand freshmen soliciting support for three ASUU candidates. H A question of the truth of the en-. en-. dorsements of the letter by twelve freshmen was brought to light Tuesday Tues-day when one of the supposed en-j en-j i dorsers claimed she had been told nothing about it. $ The letter endorsed ASUU Presi-s Presi-s dential candidate Leon Dever, Pub-$; Pub-$; lie Affairs Board candidate Harris 4 Vincent, and Finance Board candidate candi-date Pat Christ. i A complaint was made to t h e Chronicle Tuesday morning by Pat- : ti Kane, whose name was listed with eleven others. Interview Students After interviewing most of these students, it was revealed that none of those interviewed had actually seen the letter. It was also found that at least five of the twelve had not known about the letter, though some had expressed support for the candidates. "It was the lirst time I had seen the letter or knew of it," she stated. 31ailing of Letter Miss Kane claimed that she had not been contacted prior to the mailing of the letter, adding that she had not given consent to having her name on the letter. "I am supporting only one of the candidates," she said. Livingston said that he knew only one of the three persons. "One asked if I'd help him," he stated, "but I was never approached with the letter. The first time I knew of it was when I got it in the mail." Unable To Attend Miss Niebuhr told the Chronicle, "I was asked to come to a meeting, meet-ing, but I was unable to attend. I heard nothing else about it until I got the letter in the mail." She added that she does support one of the candidates. "I don't know how my name got on the list," said Williams. "I found out about it Saturday from a friend who received a letter." He said he could only connect the letter let-ter with Barlow. "But I am supporting the candidates," candi-dates," he added. More Support Another freshman, Von Whitby, noted that, although he did know about the letter, he had not seen it. He was, however, directly supporting sup-porting the candidates. The other freshmen whose names were listed were unavailable for comment. Three of the names listed as supporters were misspelled. Those incorrectly spelled were Patti Kane, whose name appeared as Patty Kane; Von Whitby, whose name appeared as Vaughn Whitney; and Steve Kuemmerle, whose 'name appeared ap-peared as Steve Kimberly. Christ said he had given two of the names, under the impression that they would be contacted and read the letter "Unfortunately, they weren't contacted and I fully apoligize," he said. Vincent stated there has been a lot of confusion about the letter. "We followed every election rule to make sure that the letter was in bounds," said Vincent. "As far as I knew, all 12 were supporting the three of us." He explained that Phil Barlow had headed the committee that prepared pre-pared and circulated the letter. Barlow stated that he had asked people to submit names that could be put on the letter and that he was unaware the people had not cleared the letter. "It was an error of ignorance. We meant no malice," Barlow said. Four Freshmen Other freshmen who said they had not been contacted were Marjorie Mar-jorie Meads, Roger Livingston, Judy Ju-dy Niebuhr, and Elliot Williams. |
